|Okay, I'm spending more time with this bike decision than my present ride (Carl Strong). I'm going to strip the equipment off a crashed Bianchi Veloce and put it on a Mercian frame.
I'm looking for a distinctive and retro look. (Brooks honey Swift saddle, quill stem, maybe even shellacked handlebar wrap).
Shown below is the Mercian color (or should I say "colour") chart. The frame will have contrasting panels on the seat tube and down tube. The head tube will be painted the same color as the panels.
I'm limiting my color choices to enamel, because I want the look to be as basic and classic as possible (Colors 19-42). Here's what I'm thinking of:
Primary Color: 35 Bianchi Blue
Panels and Headtube: 21 Beige Enamel (Like a Rivendell Atlantis)
Primary Color: 24 Light Blue Enamel
Panels and Headtube: 21 Beige Enamel
Primary Color:41 French Blue Enamel
Panels and Headtube: 31 Canary Yellow Enamel (Like Swedish National Colors)
Primary Color: 29 Rivera Blue Enamel
Panels and Headtube: 27 Orange Enamel (Like Dutch National Colors)
Primary Color: 32 British Racing Green Enamel
Panels and Headtube: 21 Beige Enamel (Very British)
Primary Color: 40 Chocolate Brown Enamel
Panels and Headtube: 21 Beige Enamel (Conservative)
Thoughts? Suggestions? Feedback?

|i like the british racing green/beige
is 19 a pale yellow? or more like a cream color. if cream, i'd go with 42/19 or 42/21.
too bad they don't have a deep burgundy, that would look nice with cream or beige.

|I tried to get my Ibis Mojo in an orange gold metalic powder coat, but they kept having problems with the finish. Someday I may have it redone. Is yours solid orange or metalic? Looks great! What's the logo on the head tube?

|Your fabulously gorgeous bike is causing my mind to wander...
But I really don't need another bike!

Oh, the agony of bike lust.

|I'm a big fan of British Racing Green and think it will look nice and classy combined with Beige Enamel. The only one on your list that I'd skip is brown and beige. You can't really go wrong with any of the proposed schemes.|

|Mercian's color chart does not really do justice to their colors or shades, in my experience. The turquoise near the bottom row and the yellows look pretty close to the actual Mercian colors. If you chose enamel, then Mercian can match any color you pick out. However, their flamboyants are really much more striking than the enamels.
I had Bob Jackson repaint my Mercian last year in a two tone green very close to the frame in the background shown on the Spectrum website. It looks great. (almost identical to colors #1 and #48)
I have seen #6 & #7 combined nicely, #37 and #61, and racing green or green flamboyant with one of the yellows in a "barber pole" on the seat tube that looked great.
On the other hand, I had my Spectrum painted a candy green with pearl yellow headtube and seattube panels and it looks great and is in the gallery at the Spectrum forum website. In this case, the green is really not accurately represented in the picture. Many compliments on the colors.

|As a member of the MOB, or Mercian Owners' Bunch, myself, I have two observations about your choices:
1) Like Steve recommends, you should think about getting one of your colors in "flamboyant." Mercian's enamels are nice, but the flamboyants are what they're really known for finish-wise. If I'm not mistaken, they consist of a transparent color over a silver metallic base layer, and the results are pretty stunning. I have a King of Mercia painted in the same color scheme as the "Superlight" model on their website, and am still amazed by how little justice the pictures do to the actual bike; the catalog colors are OK, but the actual bike is a deep, almost sexual red. The "Anquetil blue" is really nice.
2) As far as color schemes go, have you considered using one of the ones in the Mercian catalog? They're the classic stylin'-retro ones associated w/ Mercian, methinks more so than a straight panel job. Barber pole, anyone?
You'll like the bike regardless. Mercian builds great bikes cheaply. Which model are you getting?

|There's just something I dig about British Racing Green. I think 32 could also look good with 18, 20, 25, 27, 40, maybe even 38. You know, retro, British race cars. Eh, whatever.|| |
