Before Spandex there was wool. I still put on an old wool jersey on occasion. Good for cool weather with a chance of light rain or drizzle. Wool keeps you warm when it's wet and you don't have to carry an extra article of clothing that you may not need. Doesn't breathe as well as the latest synthetics, though.
What about for shorts?PhatMatt

Wouldn't wool be a little scratchy in a comando situation?

You betcha! Actually, for those of us allergic to wool, the arrival of lycra/spandex was a godsend. Previously there were a few acrylic jerseys and synthetic shorts around, but there was a limited supply and very little choice. I'm starting to itch right now, just thinking about the "old days."

In my case it was cotton gym shorts, you know the ones that were about 4" above mid thigh. No wonder I never roade that much back then.
