Okay you medical types, what would be the benefits of insulin to an endurance athlete? I know insulin is used to control the blood sugar level, but , why would Pantani take insulin if not a diabetic?

Probably for a number of reasons, it puts glucose into the muscle cells to be stored as glycogen and it has anabolic effects (it promotes protein synthesis in the muscle cells). So you can see right away how that would potentially help recovery. Cyclingnews also says it potentiates the effects of growth hormone. On the down side, if you take too much, you drop your blood glucose below a tolerable limit and end up passed out or in shock!

Pantani and other dopers don't take the insulin by itself, but take it along with a big dose of glucose. The insulin then forces the body to absorb more blood sugar than normal, giving the body a greater store of glucose than can be achieved by normal means (ie eating food).
