Have you got "2 Seconds"?Me Dot Org

pfw2 plugged this movie last year. It was in the "New Arrivals" DVD section of my video store last night and rented it.

A suprisingly good little movie that has at its core the genuine love of cycling. It's about a 28 year old MB downhiller (Laurie) who inexplicably freezes at a starting gate and loses 2 seconds of time, and consequently her job. She goes back to her hometown, her life suddenly without direction. One day she loses a chain and comes across a tiny bike shop in an alley. The owner (Lorenzo) is ridiculously rude to her. They are opposites. She's a mountain biker. He's a roadie. She's Shimano. He's Campy. She wants a radial spoked wheel. He thinks it's just fashion.

So of course they develop a friendship, a friendship based on their almost palpable love of cycling.

Most of the actual cycling scenes in the movie revolve around the job Laurie gets as a bike messenger. Of course she gets "doored". I also learned a water bottle trip I'm not sure I'll ever use. For part of the movie Laurie is wearing a Swobo Jersey, which wins a place for her in my heart.

Yes, there are rough spots. The resolution is a little too serendipitous for my tastes, and there is a scene with a replacement bicycle that isn't believable. But on the whole the movie works, and it works in conveying the love of cycling.

French Canadian. French with English subtitles.

Maybe I'll watch it for the water bottle trick, or maybe you could just tell us. Or maybe I'll watch it because I've seen an add and I know she's cute.

...sorry if this post's title is a spoiler for anyone...

"2 Seconds" is a character-driven movie. The pleasure in watching is not in intricate or convoluted plotting, like Memento, or a big plot secret, like The Crying Game. The pleasure is character development. Saying you "know what happens" is like saying somone ruined "Romeo and Juliet" by telling you it's about a boy and girl who fall in love.

Next thing you know I'll be letting it slip that the Japanese bomb an American naval base in Pearl Harbor.

The version I saw is not about a boy and girl falling in love... I won't spoil the ending, but it has a little twist..

And I'll probably see it anyway. I find I always have a better experience watching a movie when I dont know a thing about it and no one has recommended it, but thats a rare occasion. Im sure I dont have to tell you that Breaking Away is a great movie and Quicksilver is stupid. Whats American Flier like, just give it a yea or nay. Kevin Cosner, haa.
