It is listed as a Lumbar support saddle by Selle Italia. I can't see where that backrest would ever help anything.

You must need a really short top tube in order to sit upright enough to use that thing.

Having a backrest to push against when climbing would help.
Although it should also be illegal.
Way back when they had a leash that you could attach to your waist & to you quill stem.

Think of a leg press machine ;-)

The pros used to use those in time trials back in the late '80s I believe. I remember seeing guys like Fignon and Thierry Marie using them in the Tour prologue.

The claim was that it supported the rider, but the video showed that the rider's butt never touched the saddle. It was a fairing, plain and simple, and so the UCI declared it illegal for competition.

I saw this one a web page about time trial fairings. This seat was for the forward aero position. I hate that I can't remember the site! I'm positive that's what it's for.
