|thank you for posting that. i can't imagine what it must have been like for the other riders who've survived. the guilt associated with such events is deeply painful. if anyone on this board knew Messrs. Cappo and Seiden, I am truly sorry for your loss. |

|No words to describe something as egregious as the acts of this driver. My heart and my deepest sympathies go out to their families, friends and fellow riders.|

|Mary Peck, 20 years old. Killed by an overtaking dump truck. Witnesses said she came off the shoulder into the truck's path, he couldn't miss her. I believe he should have given her more room, but accounts at the scene said the driver went to pieces when he saw what happened so maybe he doesn't deserve our loathing.
She was an extremely fast marathoner, a legitimate prospect for the 2008 US Olympic team, based on her results. She was also an experienced cyclist. One just has to wonder how this could happen.
The thing that enraged me was the local paper that described her striking the truck with her bike. So, how does that work when they're both going in the same direction?

|I read about the Baton Rouge incident last night, and woke up this morning thinking that there are no accidents.
"Accident" is just a polite way of saying that someone's lapse in judgement resulted in a loss of some sort.
The Space Shuttle Challenger explosion was a lapse in judgement.
Exxon Valdez was a lapse in judgement.
Road rage incidents resulting in deaths are a lapse in judgement.
Fender benders which occur when somene fails to check their mirrors before changing lanes are a lapse in judgement.
This guy apparently lost focus and killed two people. It wasn't an "accident". He could have been more careful - it was within his control.
"Careless" is a more appropriate term than "accident". But since we are all careless at times - we sugar coat the truth with the term "accident".
