Tire question...(4 posts)

Tire question...MVN
Jun 11, 2002 3:57 PM
I use Specialized Armadillo's, but I'm getting tired of the harshness of the ride. I've had them for a year and I love not getting flats, but I'm looking for something more supple and lighter but with good flat protection. I don't know much about tires, so if anyone has any suggestions let 'em rip. I DO know that I want Kevlar beaded tires. So what's a good tire with a Kevlar bead, flat protection/puncture resistance, and a smooth ride? BTW, I don't know if weight matters much (or at all) but I weigh 215. Thanks for your time.

When people ask for flat protection, the recommended tire is the Armadillo. A lot depends on your local conditions and riding style, so you may just have to experiment. At your weight, the primary issue would be tire size, with a 25 or 28 as a suggestion. The Vred Fortezza is a pretty solid tire in that size, as is the Conti Ultra 2000.

Michelin Axial Select has Kevlar, and its ride is not too shabby.

I have had great luck with Performance Forte Kevlar tires in both the 23 and 26 size. At 235 lbs I do prefer the 26's. They are kevlar beaded and kevlar belted. Pretty good on the weight and ride.
