Okay, AIDSRide tomorrow (the D.C. ride). Not the purest cycling event of all time, but I'm pumped -- 2,000 riders (well, we'll see, anyway), lots of miles over four days, good scenery, no wife giving me that look when I come up the walk, etc., etc. And sports bras, don't forget sports bras.
Pegoretti or Litespeed?
Used to be more comfortable on the LS, dialed things in, now more comfortable on the Pegoretti.
LS is more on the indestructible side -- unpainted ti, sealed headset (would take the same wheelset, either way). I like my Natchez, but . . .
I'm getting to love my Pegoretti. Being a p*ssy at heart, though, I'm a little concerned about checking my bike with the authorities at night. Light boron steel (Deda EOM 16.5). Pretty danged fragile paint. And maybe a little concerned about the rain. Because it will rain. Pegoretti is steel, of course. Not frame-saved.
What say you, fellows? Just ride the damn bike? or be cautious?

|The security is very tight. Once you check your bike in, you cant take it out until the morning. As for paint issues, if you make sure when you get into camp to park your bike at either end of the rack or in a rack that is almost full you will have less to worry about concerning scratches.
I took my Merak to CAR last year and it came through fine. There were 3000 riders I think.
Have fun, it is a blast. Nothing to worry about but the daily mileage.

My friend Dan says, it's a bike for crissakes. It won't melt. Ride what you want. You think your wife will let you do something like this again anytime soon? (dan has the advantage of knowing my wife).

|I've got a lot on my plate this weekend. Between the kid's soccer and the Bethesda Crit on Sunday (meet the World's Oldest Cat 5), my time is unfortunately all accounted for. I did see the route that you have laid out -- very nice.|

|The races will run on Sunday (June 16) and last pretty much all morning. The ball opens at 8:30 am with the Masters 40/50 race. The morning should progress nicely, leading up to the Cat 1,2,3 race at 2:10 pm or so. The day's racing should wrap up about 3:30-ish.
The course is in the funky Woodmont Triangle section of Bethesda, with the start/finish area at St. Elmo and Norfolk. If memory serves, this is very near Montgomery Doughnuts, purveyors of fine fried dough products.

Frankly, my money would be on Miss M riding in the Women's Open. Now THERE would be some serious single-speed smackdown.

I did the Alaska AIDS ride & while the conditions (weather wise) were more severe than you should expect, I would definatly recommend the Ti bike. The main issues you will encounter on these rides are the Bike barn & the rest stops.
While you can attempt to put your bike on the end of a rack, There is no guarantee that that is where it will stay. They like to put tandems & recumbents on the ends, so if yours happens to be there, and they need the spot, they will move it. Once you are hanging on the rack, there is no telling hom many times it will be banged as people look for & retreive their bikes. So if the paint is "fragile, I'd leve it at home.
Picture the rest stops at the Seagull, only on a smaller footprint. Now picture leaqving your bike somewhere. You get the picture.
Not frame-saved! Take the Ti & have no worries.

|Build a glass box to display bikes you are afraid to ride. If the Pegoretti is dialed in, that's the one I'd take.|

|Unless you're willing to start very early you will be spending time with, and passing, many leisurely riders. If I had my AIDS ride to do over I would ride my commuter bike with it's big tires, clips and straps and old paint. If you are an experienced rider for whom the mileage is not a new challenge the ride is much more about the event and its people than it is about bikes and riding. Have fun, ride hard a little bit each day, and focus on taking your time and enjoying the company most of the ride. Rest assured any statement you make with your bike will be lost on most of the riders.|

|On the California Aids Ride I did last year I found a large group of dedicated and experienced cyclists. The number of high end bikes ranged from Litespeed, De Rosa, Klein, Colnago, Merlin, Cannondale, Ciocc, Look-you get the point.
The faster more experienced riders had a large contingent of riders to pace themselves with. I had my fill of bike conversation by the end of the 3rd day. Talking about parts, frames and what not.
You are right about the purpose of the ride but I also found a challenging ride everyday. The key was to bang out the miles as fast as you could to make it to the camp so you didnt have a wait for the showers when you got there.

|There were plenty of riders with nice bikes on Boston-NYC when I did it. The first two days, riding at my normal pace and taking very short breaks, there were 40 or 50 bikes out of 2000 on the racks when I finished. In effect I was doing what I always do with a different bunch of riders. The 3rd day I rode with team mates and only worked to chase down and bring back one of our team who was constantly getting ahead.
The riders who couldn't start and stop straight made riding thru the Bronx a little scary at every traffic light, but still the comraderie and fellowship with all kinds of riders realized much more of the ride's potential than using it as another fast ride with a bigger group of riders. The following year I chose to do bike tech rather than ride, an experience I heartily recommend to anybody who likes lifting a wrench.

If you look closer, Bill, it's easy to trace ...
Incidentally, although I am not forgetting, I am not bringing any sports bras.

But hey, go with the one you enjoy riding the most. You worked hard raising the money and training. Now you get to enjoy it. A little rain will not turn a steel bike into a pile of rust. And I'm sure the bike storage is very well run. Your bike will be safe from thieves and paint chips.
