So I got my bike on top of the Landcruiser the other day, running a few errands and in need of some cash so I swing into the bank. I'm not paying attention, to busy chatting with my friend, when we both hear that sound. You may have heard this sound yourself. It sounds an awful lot like your rack being ripped from the top of your car. a quick calculation in my head and I figure I'm out a couple grand and in need of a new bike. Hop out of the car, and to my amazement the bike is fine (GT ZR 2.0) but the factory rack has seen better days. The Thule bike rack seems fine, the trays may need a little straightening. I'm so happy it wasn't the new Look 381 on top, I dont think it would have survived. The GT is minus a little clear coat and a slight scratch on the top tube. The roof at the bank hit on the top tube since my bike was fork mounted. I Need to make sure the bikes/rack are insured, cause I know it's bound to happen again. Anyone have similar experience, and what kind of insurance covers an accident like this? auto, homowners? Thanks

Sounds like you intended to go to the bank with your bike on your roof.... Now maybe if you rolled your Landcruiser and the bike was banged up... but this? ;)

Then again, if as you state "the roof at the bank hit on the top tube," I guess it would be the bank that would need to pay. It must have been quite a curiosity to see the roof lash out like that.

Finally, you scare me when you indicate that it is "bound to happen again." It is like rebuilding a house after a flood... that was built in a flood plain. I'd put the bikes in the back.

(Sorry to give you such a hard time... I just couldn't help myself).

The only reason that I don't buy a roof rack, is the knowledge that I would eventually do the same. I am certain of it.

no, the roof did not jump out and hit my bike, I was driving through for the ATM machine. I think there is a chance it could happen again unfortunately. I have heard so many stories of people doing it on their garage. I'm not worried about the garage because I remove the garage door opener. I'm just one of those people that my mind tends to wonder to other things, especially when I'm having a conversation. Just like your probably the kind of person that reads through posts and picks apart people's replies. I posted this so that others may find humor in it, I did. Life happens.

Maybe instead of checking on your coverage, you should check to see if you really need such a large vehicle.
