Strange (non-negative) experience with motorist...biknben

On Tueday's ride home a car slows while passing me. I look over to see this young couple (+-20 YO). The guy has a huge smile, looks at me and yells, "23 MPH!!!" I started laughing and they drove off. Apparently, he thought 23 mph is really fast.

Wait, it gets better.

At the next light I catch up to them. Now the girl asks me if I've seen Breaking Away. I tell her "I have a copy of it at home". Then she says she "Just wanted to make sure you got the reference". I just nodded and smiled.

The light changed and we parted ways. I spent the next couple minutes thinking about which part of the movie she was making reference to. I guess it was the highway drafting scene. But, in that case, our fearless cyclist was doing 60, drafting a truck. I couldn't think of any other part she could have been referring to and eventually shook my head and pedaled on.

Definately made the ride a little more interesting.

Yup, it would have to be that. Remember seeing the shots of him doing 60 mph, but he was in the SMALL RING?

I've had motorists do that several times. On a nearby hilly road where I do hill repeats a guy followed me down, not keeping up, actually. Going up the next hill his kid passenger in the front seat yells out "you were going over 50 mph!" I tried to look as non-chalant as I could, but thanking them nonetheless.

was riding along when a pickup starts following by my side (i was in a bike lane) and i figured the idiot would soon start telling me to get off the road or something. there was a stoplight ahead and i was prepared for the worst when he opened his window and said something about my going 25MPH. guess he was amazed a bike could go that fast.

A guy in a pickup tailed me for a couple of minutes and then crept up next to me with his passenger window me a thumbs up and shouts out 35 mph as we continue along the false flat...he speeds up and continues on, as do I with a little better feeling for humanity.

I love to see large groups of riders going fast, at races I'll find a long straight downhill section & as the pack comes by I kneel down & just look straight ahead, not focusing on anything except the blurr of color & hum of tires with undertones of chains & gears clicking & the wind blowing my hair & clothes.
Drivers don't when they take up more than 1 lane. -nmTig

they DIDNT think 23 was really fast, but rather based on their knowledge of Breaking Away, they thought it was really SLOOOOWW.
I have one. . .Mike P

I was riding down a fairly steep, curvy road a while back; I guess it's about 2 miles long. Anyway, about half way down I caught up to an SUV, following it the rest of the way down. We were hitting 50 or so. Near the foot of the mountain I saw the right, rear window rolling down and figured I was about to get a beer or something tossed at me. Instead I saw a little hand pop out the window giving the biggest "thumbs up" I've ever seen. I stopped next to them at a traffic light and this 4 or 5 year old was grinning ear to ear. Made my day!

I'm laughing out load nmtronracer

A few weeks ago a buddy and I rode by a speed trap with a police officer who had a sense of humor. Seeing him aim his radar at the cars as we approached, we began to speed up. We could tell that he was amused with us and as we sprinted by, he laughed and turned the gun around so we could see our speed. By the way, I won the sprint :)

This was much more fun then the police officer who gave me a moving violation on my bike about three months ago for going through a stop sign.

I was riding thru a local park last year & the police had a radar trap set up with big digital display to catch park speeders. When I saw it I instinctively sprinted to see what I could do. As I built speed I remembered that the park speed limit was 15mph & I was already speeding before I sprinted. I braked hard & cruised past the officer, who just gave me the "no-no" finger wave & smiled. I waved back thankfully & left the park at the next gate.

Most of the cops out there are pretty cool.
