anyone else have chest pains in the summer timeishmael

I brought this up last summer and it was decided that it was the ozpne level that rises when it's hot out that was the culprit. Once again it was hot on the east coast and I'm hurting when I breath in deeply. Does anyone else have this problem. It's really noticable after a ride when I try to get a really deep breath, try it, uncomfortable? Ever had asthma or bronchitis?

I'm on the East Coast too - and I haven't experienced what you are describing ever. For the record, I've mistreated my lungs on many, many occasions over the years. Sometimes I've felt a dull sensation in my chest as a result of what I know was my cigarette smoking. (incredibly stupid, I know) but I've never felt pain. Asthma runs in my family, although I do not have it, and I've never had bronchitis.

So if you are having *pain*, you should see a doctor.

My dad. He says I'll be fine, but he says that about everything except smoking (good thing you stopped). Doctor opinions are over-rated, I doubt I'll find a doc who has much experience with this sort of thing. I've heard of others having the same problem and it's from ozone levels supposedly. You lose a bit of alasticity from ozone inhalation, I seem to feel it.

How painful?

The day after really hard rides, I typically get what I call 'bruised lungs'. They just feel like all my other muscles when they're fatigued and heavy.

When I lived in LA, it'd be 'smog lung'. Feels similar, but we don't have smog here.

And I have had bouts of bronchitis in the past. Most recently, late last year.

It's most noticable after a hard ride and when you try to take a really deep breath, its kind of irritated sore. It always heals by the next day but I remember also experiencing an inability to get a really deep breath, like when you try to yawn and cant get that last bit. Have you had any of these symptoms? Its not really that painful just annoying and I hate to think my lungs are being damaged by polution.

I've not experienced the yawning thing due to riding. I used to get that 'lack of last bit' of breath during very stressful times at work, so I know what you're talking about.

The 'bruised lungs' feeling does only seem to bother me when I take deep breaths after a hard ride - not with just normal breathing. It makes sense to me that I've used my lungs to the point of fatigue or soreness, just like my quads. The rides that cause this are major huffers/gaspers for me.

I am an ex-smoker and lived in LA for way too many years. So, I hate to think of what's going on in there now.

It certainly wouldn't hurt to run it by the doc. If you do happen to get a diagnosis, I'd be interested to hear it.

Good luck-

Oops - I just saw your post above.

The elasticity theory sure sounds like the deal here. Makes sense.
