|There is an organized century starting fairly close to where I live. I am going to give it a try, and I was wondering if any one had any pointers or tips on what would be the best gear to bring with. I will take patch kit, xtra tube, multi-tool, co2 inflator with probably 3 carts. Is their any thing else that would be nessecary or just plain helpful to have. I know some one out there will say "a bike" or water or something painfully obvious. Also what is the best sports drink or supplement to bring for that day? All help is appreciated.|

Sports drinks are meant to taste good so you'll remember to hydrate. Then there's eating. You'll need food. Calorie dense things like nuts (trail mix), couple bagels, dried fruit, or a PB&J sandwich.
Use the feed stops so you don't need to carry much.
If you must drink calories try orange juice, or a meal type drink called BOOST available in the diet section of grocery and pharmacy stores. Even Slim Fast might give some needed calories and nutrients.
A century is a lot if you're not used to the mileage or eating on the bike. Sometimes the effort plus the food can cause problems. Take it easy and have a good time. Better to err on the side of drinking too much water than too much food or Gatorade.

|Carry a piece of cloth rim tape. If you slice a tire it makes a good patch inside your tire to keep the tube from popping out.|

|On my first century, I took enough energy gel and cliff bars to feed a batallion of marines. Don't overpack. If this is a supported century, they should have rest stops every 20 miles or so. Most Centuries will have bannas, muffins, bagels, orange slices, etc., along with gatorade (or something roughly equivalent).
If it will be sunny, don't forget the sunblock. I always pack at least one gel (I use Mocha Mocha from Clif because I'm a caffeine addict) just in case I get bonked on a hill somewhere.
Depending on the temperature, I just wear a s/s jersey with armwarmers that I can shed if it gets warm.
As far as energy suppliments: I use GU2O. I also am faithful about using Endurox R4 for post ride recovery. A lot of people use other stuff - whatever makes you happy. The important thing is: Don't wait until the century ride to try it. ALWAYS try food or gear you will be using on the century ride on a shorter ride BEFORE you do the century.

|It sounds like the ride, being organized, you should have support available for most other items you may need.
A couple weekends ago on a solo century ride I brought raingear (lightweight waterproof shell) but failed to pack extra pairs of socks. Although it never did rain, the trail I was riding on had weeds that in the morning shed dew onto my shoes, and in turn onto my socks, making them soaking wet. Having wet feet for hours on a bike is not fun, next time I will pack extra socks, they're lightweight and fit easily in any pack.
I also noticed that even with drinking what I thought was enough water I still was down 8 pounds of water weight at the end of the ride, so be sure to drink before you are thirsty since by then you already dehydrated.
Although it was mentioned already in another response, I would also stress the importance of sunblock as you will get more sun exposure during the ride.

|All it is is a longer ride-don't fool around.
Don't get all excited and go any faster than you have been. Might even try going a little slower than normal for the first hour or so.
Don't start feeling good about how you are doing and forget to eat and drink.
Don't think it is a race and start running lights and stop signs.
Just stay focused on your goal of finishing and stick with your plan and your style of riding.
Don't forget that you are doing this for fun-so have fun. The more fun you have the better you will do.

|Hope that's not painfully obvious, but I seldom carry any on short rides. An air-conditioned 7-11 can look mighty good at 80 miles.
Pain reliever of choice. I still like aspirin, but whatever you like short of codeine or demerol should be fine.
Take short breaks. After 10 minutes I start stiffening and getting back in the saddle looks harder and harder.
Have fun, it's really just four twenty-five mile rides.

It's a long ride (especially if it is your first century), and the weather could be very different 8 hrs after you've started from your house. Just because the sky looks clear outside in the morning, does not mean that it won't rain later.
www.weather.com gives a very accurate forecast, especially when you are looking less than 12 hrs in the future.
Carry Advil or other pain killer. Some part of you is sure to be sore if this is a considerable increase in mileage. ;-) .
Food, drink, extra tools for rare conditions, rim tape etc: Dont bother, with stuff that you do not otherwise carry on a 30 mile ride. That is what SAG is for. As someone else said above, it is just four 25 mi rides, from one rest stop to another.
A solo or unsupported century is different and will require more planning.
