shaving questions, againweiwentg

1) you're not supposed to shave against the grain, right? if not, how do you get rid of all the damn stubble?
2) leg hair does not grow back coarser or longer, right? I ask because my mother just freaked out and went ballistic, and I need to placate her.

1. I always shave against the grain, but I'm a mutant with thick skin.

2. If/when you quit shaving, when they grow back the hairs will end up looking just like they did before you shaved, unless you are in your teens. Then it would grow back on your palms.

On the recommendation of poster on the velonew.com site I have used Skintiment and the Shick aqua colored razor. Gets a very close shave when "going against the grain". Stubble will return after a couple of days though.

Coarser.... don't know about that. I've heard that pulling the hairs via an epilator or hot wax will cause the next-gen hairs to be finer. I just got an epilator so I'll have some personel experience shortly. That damn epilator took forever to do two legs. :( If it doesn't get a whole lot faster in follow-up applications then I'm going back to shaving. The shaving thing is VERY fast.... two minutes tops.

Are you talking about the very first time??? If so, perhaps you tried to shave the original full length fur off???? That WILL take a huge amount of time!!!

Follow-up shaves should be VERY fast. I'd highly suggest Skintimate and the Shick aqua colored razor for quick turn-around times. One minute per leg might be a bit quick but I KNOW it isn't very much longer than that.

Now that ipilator deal is a whole different story..... that take a long time!

Well, I always shave against the grain (legs and face), and haven't had any problems.
Shaved hair doesn't grow back any coarser or darker, but it might look it at first, due to the neatly cut end. Newly growing hair starts out finer at the end, hence the difference. Once it makes it to an inch, the shaved stuff will have worn down to match.
Personally, I use a Venus razor and Skintimate gel (women do this all the time, so their shaving stuff ought to be better, right? Plus, both are made for large areas. Seems to work better than male-oriented products.)
I've tried an epilator, and besides the pain issue, I had tons of ingrowns in a few weeks, and exfoliating made no difference. Might be me, might be men's thicker skin, but be warned. Also, even after doing it 3 times, the regrowth was no finer, so I went back to the razor. Much less painful, and pretty fast once you get the long stuff off.
mach 3 razor or shick extreme 3 work best for meColnagoFE

first time i shaved it was with a freakin trac 2...cuts all over the place! never again. sticking with the mach 3 now. i get em at costco so they are about as cheap as the schick razors. funny thing about it...you can buy the promo pack with the razor and a couple of free gillette gimmes for cheaper than just buying the cartidges alone...what's up with that?
you can shave against the grainColnagoFE

after you do it a few times it gets easier and your skin gets used to it. just dont forget the moisturizer afterwards. tell your mom to chill out. it's not like you're getting your tongue pierced or a big tattoo or anything. hair will grow back.

1. I always go against the grain and have been for 15yrs. Never been a problem for me and I don't get "razor burn" either. Recently, I've been using the Mach 3 razor and just plain old Dove bar soap. Just take a bath after my evening ride and do the shaving then. Soaking in the warm water makes it very easy.

2. Don't know about hair growing any corser/longer/darker.
