At the begining of you cycling career, how many years of riding did you put in untill you were able to be competative as a Cat 5?

It is my observation that most cat 5s never see the podium. Near as I can tell, no matter the skill, most bail to 4s after 10 or earlier with a win or podium finish or bail from the scene completely before that. In my experience, in my area, this is what I still see. The dudes who win the 5s are crossover athletes from tris, mtn, college racers, etc. The others who are just plain hard workers and trainers and win or see podium likely request an upgrade immediately to see what happens.

I don't know anyone who has been a 5 for more than 10 to 15 (while the processing is going on) races. For some, 10 does turn to 2 seasons I suppose, though I know nobody in that boat.

For me? I felt competitive as a 5 after maybe 1 or 2 races.

I trained hard for 6 months at about 12 hours a week, got 8th in my first 4/5 road race, 5th in my second, and 2nd on my third. I have been riding a few times a week for a few years but nothing like the program I am on now. If you take your training serious and develop a solid program, I think most people have the potential to easily place in a cat 5 race.
I must add.mixinbeatz

No one that races regularly is a 5 longer than they have to be. It doesn't really matter around here(NW) because the 4's always race with the 5's anyhow. In fact, I am not even going to send in my upgrade to 4 until I go to cat 3 later this season.

about 6 months and i won my first 5 race. it depends on how you ride and who you train with. training with a bunch of 2's and 3's makes a big diff.
Got 1st in my second 5's race last year.JS

We had a guy win the Cat 5 BAR, (Best all around rider)
for two years straight. And the guy won some 4/5 races.
Isn't someone supposed to be watching this kinda stuff?
