Just when I'm looking forward to gloating over his abandonment, the little guy actually makes some redeeming comments.
He's not making excuses. He's not blaming anyone else. He effectively says that he let the sponsor down.
Of course, the "mentally unprepared" angle is probably just a mechanism for avoiding coming to grips with the likelihood that without juice he's not competitive, but it's nice to see him taking responsibility for a change.

"My team hasn't been invited to the Tour de France because I'm no longer a competitive rider...I'm going to work to rebuild a new team with a new sponsor."

If you are no longer a competitive rider, why bother building a new team? Why bother continuing at all?

"Cycling has always been generous to me, so I have to give something back."

I wish he would recognize that the longer he drags on the current "pathetic" period, the more people will forget his glorious past. I used to love to watch him race. Now I cringe whenever they show him being dragged somewhere by his team.

I was a big Pantani fan myself. While I agree that he was juiced I still believe that everyone else is too. He was the best of the juiced riders. I loved his wild attacks and the way he danced on the pedals. He is past his prime and I wish he would just ride off into the sunset. The guy still has the desire, if not the talent to compete. He should probably channel that competitive spirit into another field of endeavor.

Someone must have told him they changed the Giro to a club ride...

I wasn't the biggest Pantani fan, but enjoyed watching him, always thinkin' he's on the juice, but heck, I don't really have a problem with all that as much as some.

I too now can't stand to watch or hear or read him.

Does anyone think that's the only reason his team wasn't invited to the TDF? LOL He could win the Giro and my guess it wouldn't be. Same with Cipo. They are hopefully not that stupid.

It is plain to see how the TDF guys are picking teams. They are virtually identical to last year. The smaller French teams performed so well last year in my opinion that there would have been no chance for them to not gain that invite this year.
