June 15. A 5-8 hour drive from home. Considering it.

It's a beautiful but very challenging ride. Expect to spend at least seven hours on your bike, most of that climbing. If you aren't prepared, you will suffer. Also, take to heart the admonition, "It is important to come prepared for cold and rain." Personally, I prefer the shorter (80 mile) version of the ride, which takes you out and back over the 5390' climb. Nevertheless, if you are prepared, the full "challenge" is definitely worth doing.

I have not done the challenge but I have ridden part of the Cherohala Skyway. (The westward leg of the Challenge). I rode from Tellico Plains to the highest point on the map, then back down; (The last 30 miles of the Challenge). I had never ridden a mountain even half that long but made it without killing myself, running a 12-23 cassette. I put on a 12-25 earlier this week, thinking the 25 may come in handy for those last three teeth in the ride.

As for the Cherohala Skyway. . . it is a BIG hill but the views are unmatched around here. I am riding the last half of the challenge route Saturday to see if I think the 25 is of any use. I registered for the Challenge last week; my first ride longer than 85 miles. . . That should be interesting.

I have not been on the part they call The Tail of the Dragon but it is nothing but curves and I would bet very scenic as well.

If you like hills and scenic views, do it! You'll be glad you did.

I am going a different way in the morning; it's supposed to be a bit faster. I'll let you know tomorrow night when I get back how long it took and which roads to look at on the map.

I don't know if this is the best way but. . . I-75 to 30 (Exit 49)(Athens). 30 to 411 (Etowah). Go right on 411. 411 to 310. Turn left on 310. 310 turns into 39 (don't turn left here) 39 to 68. Turn right on 68 and you're in Tellico Plains. I have no idea where the school is, will have to check the webpage.

I was glad to have the 12-25. A 27 or triple might be welcome. Serious large amount of relentless uphill riding!

I did the whole thang last year. It is about that long of a drive for me too, and worth the trip -- you should go for it.
