Casagrande thrown out of the Girommaggi

Francesco Casagrande has been disqualified by the Giro d'Italia jury because he caused "on purpose" Fredy Garcia's fall in today's sprint to the GPM of Castelnuovo, at the 17th kms of today's stage 15. The colombian rider had to be taken to the hospital for a head trauma and needed 30 stiches to close face woundes.

Unbelievable. This Giro has turned out to be so dissapointing. Bartoli, Garzelli, Simoni and now Casagrande. What sad day for Italian cycling.

That's what was reported on OLN anyway. I saw the was ugly!!
I wish there's a tape of itmmaggi

But from what I read on the Gazzetta dello Sport website, a tape isn't available because the incident occurred on a climb early in the stage and the cameras weren't rolling.

The jury relyed on interviews from cyclists and sporting directors.
terrible, is Freddy going to be ok?gtx

Then they would have to throw everyone out. I think Cippo is climbing better than Pantani these days.

only 74 more to go! nmDougSloan

You suck.
That's a pretty broad definition of "spoiling" . . .DCW

The expulsion itself was not reported on today's OLN broadcast because the expulsion did not occur until well after the end of the stage and a follow-up investigation. The author did not report the results of the stage.

I don't think this one is a "spoiler," unless you categorize all cycling news that you have not heard to be out of bounds for discussion. Perhaps you should avoid the internet, other media, other cyclists -- all are potential news sources -- for the duration.
so who gets the "Most Combative" award? nmDougSloan

Casagrande claims innocence!DASS

"I wasn't even in Italy at the time" - Casagrande.

Seriously, do these guys ever admit they are wrong? Simoni/Cocaine: Dentist. Pantani? Frigo (last year), Garzelli? Didn't Virenque claim innocence for years?
i never liked him anyway nmishmael

An asterisk for the eventual winnerTig
May 28, 2002 2:23 PM
The winner will have to endure the ever-present asterisk or footnote of something like, "He wouldn't have won if Bartoli, Garzelli, Simoni or Casagrande were there."

I don't agree with that however. If they didn't get themselves kicked out in the first place by playing dirty or doing something stupid, they could have had the chance of winning it themselves. Those guys made a bad choice and had to pay the price, so nothing should be removed from the great performances of those who make it to the podium fairly and with good sportsmanship.

It is a sad day. I thought that determination, training and desire were the keys to cycling and not a left hook? What's next? "Kick-biking"? Casagrande needs to spend more time in the saddle, not in front of the t.v. watching "tai-bo" videos.
