More shifter questions: can I get 7speed indexed? and...Skyeward

Thanks a lot for the replies I got to my first inquery.

The bike I'm looking at is a 7speed system, with downtube shifters. The options Trent talked about (see a few posts below) seemed pretty viable for me, but I got the impression that I couldn't have indexed shifting unless I went to 9 or 8 speed (which probably isn't worth it). Is this true? I might still do it even so, just wondering exactly were I stand.

Thanks again,

Yes you can get 7 speed indexing. What type of components are on the bike?

If you want to index, you will have to change out your derailleurs (rear) as well as your shifters. I do have a set of 7sp index Shimano 105s (downtube) that is available to a good home! But then again, they are downtube shifters...

is that it can be difficult to find exact, new replacement parts for a bike that is just a few years old. On the other hand, I suspect there are literally TONS of 7-speed shifters etc. in the used parts boxes of many bike riders. My bet is that if you ask everybody you meet who rides a bike, somebody will have just the part you need for little or no cost.

Use 8speed STI with 7 speed CasetteJOM

Back in 92 I purchased my first 8speed sti. I killed the wheel the first week and only had my backup 7speed available. I put the wheel on and adjusted the gears from position 1 - 7 (rather than 1-8) and all worked well.
Thus, you can use 8 speed shifters with 7 speed - you'll just have one click that does not do anything.
