I just purchased my first pair of real road shoes to go along with a new pair of look pedals. I've ridden about 5 times since installation and the cleat on my right shoe is already pretty worn out. I do put my right foot down when I stop at lights and also use it for leverage when I start up again. Is there a way to use look cleats and not wear them out so quickly. These are the red cleats. Are they really gone when the 3 wear holes on the bottom disappear? This could get expensive.

The Look cleats do wear rather quickly, if I replaced mine by their standards I'd probably be going through a set of cleats every month. I replace mine when they start squeeking or when I start slipping around a lot. I'd say on an average, mine last about two months, but I don't do any walking on them besides walking in and out of my garage before and after rides. You'd think Look would use a material for their cleats that was more durable..

Don't use your foot for starting or stopping, use your brakes to come to a full stop before putting your foot down and don't push off to get started like when you were a kid. Get some Koolstop cleat covers and put those on before doing any walking. It will take some effort to think about it at first, but you should be able to break your old habits soon.
