|I have 2 and can say they are the finest bikes I have ever ridden. Dont buy it here in the US though, buy it online from the UK. I got one off of Ebay and the other from Maestro-uk.com. They came through big time. Saved a lot of money.
Of course opinions will prevail on the type of ride the Merak will give; I can tell you that I did a 220 mile plus one day ride last year on mine and came through it just fine. It is not a harsh ride, more of a feel the road type of bike. The bike responds like nothing you have ever ridden. Even at the end of the ride I was still finding it responsive when I wasnt. It will force you to become a better rider.
Of course I have never ridden the Merkx.

|DeRosa is the master, Merckx his principle understudy. Merckx changed from Colnago to DeRosa at the height of his racing career. DeRosa helped Merckx get started in the bike building business. Both make frames that do anything with aplomb, take all the punishment a rider can dish out, and go the distance without beating him up. What more could you want?
You won't go wrong either way, but I'd go with the master. Get the Merckx later!
