I'm sure it was discussed here. I missed it. Can someone please fill me in?

I think its a combination of Saeco is stupid and just didn't have the money he wanted anymore. Cannondale has always been good about sponsoring people... then when they get big and want more money they lose them. But at the same time if a team leads you to a world championship you shouldn't drop them because you can make a little bit more money elsewhere in my opinion. But meh lots of people are happier with more money. Even if for someone like Cipo it means no more Tour de France. Out of curiousity is Saeco in the Tour this year? If they are Cipo got what he deserved... even though I'd love to see him in the Tour.

Cheers,
Nick

Also, they've decided to focus on the younger up and coming talent such a Simoni and DiLuca. While certainly not as charismatic as Mario, they perhaps are more versatile and as such, the team doesn't need to be so oriented towards to the 'train" setting up the sprint. IMHO, as much as I'm a fan of DiLuca and their teams goals, Mario's one of a kind and I think from a sponsor point of view, a mistake by both Cannondale and Saeco.

I thought I read somewhere that they wanted to cut his pay in half. He really doesn't seem like the kind of guy to go along with that, even nearing the end of his career.

Saeco wanted to reduce his wage as he was perceived to be at the end of his career and they wanted a GC contender. Mario left and Saeco got Simoni, I don't think they could afford both.
So the year in review:
Mario wins Milan-San Remo (finally), Fleche Wallone and takes a number of Giro Stages.
Simoni better do well in either the Giro or the Tour or I'd say it was a bad business decision as Mario is earning his pay check this season. Some people say Pantani was snubbed in the Tour, he's showing to be a non-entity and confirming Le Tours decsion, Mario on the other hand will be missed as without Ullrich Lance may be a shoe in and then all the drama would be a Zabel - Cippo shoot out.
