So how do you guys deal with them, there must be some good ways to get them on smoothly.

I stretch my jersey over the steering wheel and that seems to make it easier. I don't ask people to pin it on me, because I have gotten a little tired of teammates coming up to me 10 minutes before the race while I am on my trainer, asking for help pining on their number. It's not that I don't want to help them out, I just like to be all ready to go and spend the last 1/2 an hour or so before the race listening to music and getting mentally ready.

For most races we use the same number all season, so I pin mine on the night before while relaxing at home. Most of the races even tell you which side to put it on in their flyer info. I use pins on the corners and the middle of each edge to keep the wind from making a little drag chute. If your not in a rush it seems to actually go on faster and straighter. When I get to the race I put on my jersey and I am ready to go!
