Shimano repair/warranty questionJBergland

I have a first generation Ultega STI shifter (right side, rear) that has died on me. I have heard that this is not uncommon... a little pin wears out and they stop shifting properly. I have a new set that I plan to install this weekend. The broken shifter is older, 1999 model and has been involved in a crash (voiding any warranty with either). What are the chances/possibilities that I might be able to send the shifter back to Shimano to get fixed (paying for the service)? All shops that I have spoken with said that if it's not a warranty issue, I'm SOL. If I'm not able to get the shifter fixed, I'll have a left shifter and flight deck wiring harness that are perfectly good... but useless!!

not a bad place when trying to avoid buying a pair that you don't need.
