|I have an opportunity to get a deal on Kenda road tires, and I'm wondering if they're any good. I can get either the Kontender or the Koncept in all sorts of colors...! Please post all opinions, rumors, etc.

|I used to race in Ohio and Jim Wannamaker (sales manager) was the coolest, most helpful sponsor contact that my struggling women's team ever had. Manned their booth at a bunch of MTB races, Interbike, CABDA show, etc... for a couple seasons and enjoyed it immensely.
The Koncepts are great road racing tires but IME they wear quickly because they are a racing-specific soft compound; this may have been improved in the 2-3 years since I've ridden them. That being said, they were the best criterium tires I've ever ridden, and I'd gladly purchase them again if I could find someone who carried them.
The Kontender is more of a training-level tire. The only warning I'll give is that the prototypes I had back in '99 were a little flaky on the mold quality. They may have cleaned up this issue because Jim and I both took the owner to task for it at Interbike '99. These were the only tires we ever saw issues with; the quality on the Koncepts was universally superb.
Their MTB tires are unbeatable, both in value and ride quality. Their downhill tires kick ass; I've raced dual with them and wouldn't use anything else. Again, the trick is to find someone who deals in Kenda. The big distributors still tend to shy away from them for anything high-end, particularly the roadie stuff, because there's a long-standing perception that they only make tires for 20", kids' and dept. store bikes.

|Other than the reproduction Westwinds for my bike, now hard to find again as Schwinn is sucked up by (gasp, choke) Huffy, the only 26 x 1 3/4 tires available for Schwinn rims are made by Kenda and Chen Shin. Of the two, Kenda has been known to turn out some innovative products from time to time, especially in the MTB field.|

|They sponsored a club I was in and I bought a set of Koncept's and Kontenders dirt cheap. I don't know what you'd pay for them. I paid 8 per training tire and 16 per racing tire. They seem to roll well and I haven't noticed that much ware on the tires yet. So I'd say if you can get them for about the same price as a comparible that you'd like, go for it. Plus they come in all sorts of colors to match your bike. Mine are Yellow.|| |
