|He looks good. Maybe he got in shape to do the muttering-Italian-cyclist OLN commercials. Those ought to nominated for an Emmy. That guy is really something.|

|My God, I thought Europe was the home of HDTV, WTF is up with this coverage? I mean, look at NASCAR on FOX; you've got a 180-degree car going 200 mph, and even if a car pulls 9gs hitting a wall, they NEVER lose the picture. With this, they've got some 15-year-old on a moped shooting video of his thigh half the time, and then if the scooter goes under a leaf, the picture explodes. Is there NO technology in Italy? And then they've got this deafening helicopter taking grainy shots from what looks like two miles above the race -- is there no telephoto? Is the camera fixed? Can you mix up your shots a LITTLE? Jesus, local news coverage is more dynamic.
I think Phil Liggett said it best last night: "Well, we were going to give you the overall stats, but our producer is Italian, so I suppose he didn't bother." Exactly. Give me a Vespa and a Steadycam, I'll shoot circles around these jerkies.
Other than that, it's pretty good.

|As poor as you seem to think the coverage is, it's about the best we usually see, except for the Tour de France. You do understand that the transmission of the video signal has to get thru the trees right? In light of the challenges of covering an event like this with a constantly moving peoloton over many many kilometers, its not too shabby. Have you watched say....any of OLNs MTB coverage before? Tell me that is better than the Giro coverage and more dynamic.|

|Sure, US coverage of bike racing sucks (find the guy who's going to win, the hottest girl in the race and someone who's overcome adversity, do 45 minutes of warm-and-fuzzy personality segments, work in a shot of the girl's ass, and uh... oh yeah, show some of the race), but this could be better.
I can see where heavy tree canopy might affect the picture feed somewhat, but every tree, branch, rock and pole completely scrambles the feed? C'mon. Again with NASCAR, they've got cameras in cars that are shaking like a Home Depot paint mixer, boiling hot, going 200 mph, and sending out a signal through the roof among 900 team radios, broadcast signals and noise from a million other feeds, yet the picture's fine. I understand OLN has no budget, but isn't the same feed Italian TV is getting?
They really could do a better job.

|I'll drive the Vespa... if I'm allowed to run over Frigo's rear wheel. Actually, I could draw better pictures than they're broadcasting. Howabout missing the intergiro in Stage One after a 1-hour buildup by Phil and Bob, or the start of Simoni's time trial... hmmm, didn't see the guy in the pink jersey, eh? Soon, Phil is going to break out little plastic bikes, and go "well, we don't have picture, but this is what would be happening. Vroooom, vroooom."
But, REALLY, am I going to COMPLAIN, seeing that the Giro is actually on TV live? Yes, yes I am. I'm spoiled. Deal with it.

|I'm tired of the commercials starting mid-sentence of all the commentators (Phil, Paul, & Bob). And what is a commercial about EPO doing, sponsering a bike race? Cutting to commercials in the last 5, then 1 KM of the race. The TV screen at the finish of the race looks like a winning onearm bandit at Vegas - lights flashing, strobes, etc.
But I guess it's better than no coverage.

|A friend and I were discussing this the other day. i mean really, back when CBS or ABC covered the tour the video quality was great. I agree it looks like crap. We were thinking maybe some of the quality was lost converting from PAL (EU) to NTSC (US) format. I think that's right, I may have them switched. anyway, PAL has a marginally higher resolution than NTSC. so maybe something is being lost in the translation (like so many foreign things).
I guess i need to go to frane for the TDF and check it out on local TV to make a valid comparison. : )
My 2001 TDF dvd is cool, but the picture IS NOT DVD quality. keep that in mind before spending $50 on it. It's only slightly better than an OLN broadcast. .

May 15, 2002 11:47 AM
|their coverage was not live and were not doing a 1 1/2 hour show. It left them plenty of time to cut out the garbage shots. You could easily get 20-30 mins of good shots.
It ain't perfect but I'll take this coverage any day of the week over the TDF coverage offered by CBS and ESPN.

|That's the Italian audio feed, which they keep to "sweeten" the picture. It's live sound. They have to add in ambient sound or it would sound like guys talking in a room, which is very strange. Ever notice how you can hear the motorcycle or car zooming away, or riders talking? Do you think those are sound effects too? In fact, considering it is broadcast LIVE in the morning, how do you think they would add the helicopter sound effect? Maybe the whole race is scripted?|

|What i thought was pretty funny was when they left the helicopter sound effect go on into the next shot during yesterday's finish. It was as if the heli was filming the final sprint from ground level at the finish line. DOH!|

|Speaking as someone who doesn't even get OLN, I'd take any coverage over what I'm getting now, which is obviously nothing. Can't turn to ESPN, can't turn to the networks, so I have to spend my work day getting the live feeds and delayed results. At least I have that...
I just thought of something. Even if I did get OLN, I'd still be at work for the broadcasts. Still wouldn't do me a bit of good!
