How often do you change rim tape?Me Dot Org

Seems obscure, but when I changed a tire last night I noticed that the rim tape was in high relief around each of the spoke holes. I changed it - but I'm wondering how often people change the tape. Is it a mileage thing? Or are there particular signs of wear to look for?

I've noticed the same thing, but it doesn't seem to cause any problems at least with Velox, which is what I use. When I find cheap OEM rim tape on a new bike or new wheel, I replace it with good stuff, but Velox will last for years.

Same thing with their barends. I don't know how they stay in business if you never have to replace their products.

The only time I replace it is when I get a flat because it has slipped.

... on my rear. It has outlasted one rim. The front is on a replacement wheel, and only has about 28 years on it.

which is probably way too often, but it is an easy habit to remember (like replacing the battery in your smoke detector every time-change). The stuff is pretty inexpensive and I never have to worry about a spoke coming through.

Velox tape essentially doesn't wear out. I replace mine every time I build a new wheel. It's not at all analogous to a battery, which does indeed wear out. I can't imagine throwing out that much perfectly good Velox.

Tubular tires come with the tape attatched to them.
