annoying click, click, click.....what do to??zeke
May 3, 2002 8:10 PM
I have an annoying click that I cant seem to get rid of. It happens while riding only, the click seems to come from the right side, it happens (most of the time) when the right pedal is at 11 o'clock, it happens while mashing, spinning, or just pedaling with no pressure, it doesnt happen while the bike is on the stand. I checked the pedals, seat, cleats, BB (I pulled the cranks from side to side).
Here is my general set-up:
Ultegra triple (12-27)
SPD A515 pedals
Ultegra BB
Mavic Cosmos Rims
Ritchey Seat Post

Any info would be more than helpful!!!
Thanks.

Got a chain tool? I had a tick a long time ago that drove me nuts... Had a link outta kilter a bit. The ticking noise comes from when the link meets the tooth on your cassette and "snaps" over.

no chain tool, but that is a very good idea of where to look. i will switch chains and see.
thanks.

my creaks are always from a loose front skewer, i think its a kyserium thing...maybe its time to get out the stethescope, ive thought of making a version for the bike i could use while riding...sometimes the noises are impossible to isolate...find an alleyway with walls close on both sides...in my case it always ends up being something manageable and simply fixed...get off the bars and out of the saddle if you havent tried that yet, switch wheels and pedals with someone..

During yesterdays ride, I had a click, click sound when out of the saddle. When I got home, I noticed two crank bolts were too loose. When I tried to tighten the bolts the heads just sheared off. I going to replace the rest of them today.

Might sound silly but, I assume you're wearing shoes with laces. Check that the lace-end (usually plastic) isn't hitting on your crank.

thanks for the info.

I had the same thing on a ride today, I had this
annoying click from the back end. First I thought
it might have been my BB, but that felt fine.
So I shifted my weight to one side of the bike and
then the other (like a slow mo sprint), and the click
got worse on one side, so I checked my spokes, and one
of them is pretty loose. So thats my click sorted out
then.

Check chainring bolts first, then pedals, cleats, bottom bracket, if it's a Shimano Octalink remove cranks and grease the spindle, check the BB while you have the cranks off. Most sounds appear to be from the BB area but often times are not. Could be simply a creak from a dry seatpost, stem, saddle rails or bolts, headset bearings, freehub body and/or entire hub, Try using a different rear wheel before doing all the above. Best of luck, I empathize closely with creaks, clicks, and squeeks.

Since I'm waiting for a new crank to arrive for my regular bike, I took my old Mtn bike (it has slicks on it) out for a spin. I experienced the same clicking, but this was LOUD with a bit of creak added for good measure. I took the cranks off and removed the BB. cleaned the BB threads, regreased and reinstalled the works. Noise is gone!

I had a mystery creak/click once, and it was from my seatclamp. It took my a while to find it, because the sound was resonating down the seat tube to the bottom bracket.

Take a look at the Bianchi Question-

That's my hubby (yeah, he feels like a celeb now!) - he had a similar problem, and this is what Leonard Zinn suggested.

PS - all he had to do was listen to me - turned out to be his pedal.
