|My commute (about once a week) is 20 miles one way. I'm up at 5:00, brew 2 cups of strong black Yemen coffee, choke down a banana and a GU packet - out the door at 5:30. Yesterday's supper included |
a large bowl of angel hair pasta. Problem: I'm 4-5 mph slower in to work and feel like it's more
effort than the ride home. On the way in this morning I thought I'd try extra water, thinking
perhaps a de-hydration matter. It helped a bit, but I still can't seem to wind up to speed.
What the FF is going on?

|silly question... are you going uphill to work? Even slightly?
Or possibly: try a long stretch time before you head out. Your muscles are only awake for 30 minutes before you hop on the bike. Take 15 minutes and stretch well.
Just a couple ideas.

at 5:30. It's much like the tires are low, brakes are rubbing and I'm dragging a small pile of
bricks into a stout headwind. I'll try some stretching next time.

|You say out the door at 5:30--how's your sleep? Get to bed by 9:30 the night before? Do you ride hard the evening before? If you're downing 2 cups of coffee, dehydration unless it's chronic isn't your problem.
Could just be, you're not a morning person... I also remember a recent study of weightlifters that found the vast majority could lift significantly more in the late afternoon than in the morning.
Although I can't say my own experience replicates yours: I commute 30 miles RT, 3-4 times a week, and if anything I'm slower and more sluggish going home than first thing in the morning (which for me is more like 7:45 or so).

|I'm faster in the morning. My commute east/west and is very flat. The wind is always out of the south , so I don't have headwind/tailwind issues. I'll average 18-19mph in the morning and 17-18 in the evening.|

|I've never realized on my bike (no computer), but i am absolutely slower on my morning run than my afternoon run.
I can COMFORTABLY run 1 min per mile faster in the afternoon than in the morning.
Been that way for years. I dont understand it, i just accept it.

|Although I count it as 10% slower first thing in the morning. If I eat breakfast as soon as I wake up and wait 90 minutes b4 going out I'm almost as fast as my afternoon pace.|

|I have the exact same problem. It sounds like your schedule is about like mine. I'm up at 5 a.m. and out the door by 5:45 for a 23 mile commute. I have found that taking a hot shower helps to loosen things up a little and I feel more comfortable on the bike. Another thing to look at is if you are getting enough calories, I have had several occasions where I have just ran out of gas because I didn't eat enough.|

|I remember reading a study that showed that most people perform better physically in the afternoon and evening than in the morning. Personally, I find that my morning rides are mostly slower than when done in the afternoon or evening.|

|If one is slower in the morning than in the afternoon, but HR/training targets are reached during both rides, is the afternoon ride superior (training wise) to the morning ride? Due to family obligations, 4 out of 5 weekday training rides are early in the morning. I'd hate to think I am not getting the full benefit of the time spent in the saddle...

|Sorry hardly a doctor, don't play one on TV or internet forums, though do I ride with a bunch :-)
You could probably do a web search on the subject. I'm riding 35 miles of XC with a doc tomorrow, I'll see if he has any thoughts on the subject. I'm sure I'll use it as an excuse for dyeing on hills during the first part of the ride......

|I ride everyday, I'm alittle tired and the body hasn't reved up yet. I just accept it, it seems normal for me, but it would take a herd of elephants to drag me out the door at 5:30.|

|You're body depletes a significant percentage of your stored glycogen while you sleep. Even if you eat the fuel isn't accessible for a couple hours. You're therefore rev limited to the fat burning regimes of aerobic exercise. Great for weight loss, not for intense aerobic efforts. Totally normal. Get up and eat something at 3 or 4 if you want to be faster at 6.|

|(though no doctor, either) is that you are asking your body to get revved up from a cold start. Kind of like a car that the oil has been sitting around getting thick. Your resting heart rate (from sleeping) is low, you last ate maybe nine hours earlier and the GU won't kick in for a little while. Your muscles are relaxed and cold and not ready for firing. In the afternoon, you have been relatively active for sometime, have been nourishing the body, and working the muscles. Easier to get up to speed from an active start than from an inactive (sleep) start.
Just my common sense ideas. Don't sweat it.

|My commute (about 17 miles) rises to its highest point about 5-6 miles into the ride. Then, it's mostly downhill from there. Takes me about an hour. The ride back is on the same route, so I'd have the hills to deal with for the majority of the ride, and I'd bet that it will take me longer (I haven't actually done it yet), probably a good 10-20 minutes. Also, I'm a morning person, so that probably helps as well.|| |
