I will be going to Decorah, Iowa to visit my girlfriend's mother over Memorial Day weekend. I was planning on bringing my bike. Does anyone have any info on good rides, roads to avoid etc? Any websites with maps would be great. Thanks in advance.

I live 90mi. west of Decorah, there are alot of nice hills over there and some very scenic views as you get close to the Mississippi River. The Iowa Sportsman's Atlas has a website, you can find it with a search,it has every road in the state laid out in book form county by county. Most of the county roads in Iowa are great for cycling, the rural areas are nearly abandon since the demise of the family farm. Cycling is not very popular in the Northern part of the state,I don't know of any clubs that have scheduled rides anywhere between Ames and the Twin Cities.

Decorah is surrounded by good long climbs. South of Decorah in a town called Elgin are some good climbs on good roads with farm traffic. However you choose, the only shop I know of is in Decorah. Take with you what you need!

The Iowa DOT has a transportation map for cyclists that shows all of the state's bike trails and codes highways by traffic levels. That is a very scenic area of the state with few established trails but many lightly traveled secondary roads that are great for cycling. You should be able to get a map from the Iowa DOT but if the recent spate of budget cuts precludes that, e-mail me and I'll send you one.

come down to the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area, there is a nice trail system through here. George Wyth State Park, the Cedar Valley Nature Trail, etc. Got a couple of nice shops too, Europa Cycle & Ski, and Bike Tech, both in Cedar Falls.
