old bike, new wheels: open pros with ultegra, or 105?JS Haiku Shop

my '00 specialized came with cxp21 rims built around ritchey hubs. the rear popped a few spokes and was rebuilt by the LBS, but not very well. i've had constant true problems with both wheels, and the ritchey skewers are garbage. the rest of the com-po-nent package is mostly 105 (specialized cranks).

I haven't noticed any problems with the wheelset on my bianchi (105/cxp33) in the last year, aside from needing to be put in true a couple times. is the weight *and* performance *or* durability difference enough to spring for the extra few bucks for ultegra hubs?

why, or why not?

I built up a wheelset with Ultegra and Open Pros this winter. (32 hole, 14/15 double butted spokes) Tough and bulletproof.

Nashbar was blowing out Ultegra hubs at $32 a pop a while back, either front or rear. (They are now doing the same with Daytona hubs...) The Ultegra hubs are noticably nicer than my old 105-based wheelset -- nicer finish, seals are better. I've not broken them open yet, so I cannot say whether the bearing surfaces appear to be better finished.

The wheelset also built up very nicely -- nothing like good quality parts to make wheelbuilding a joy.
I'd go Ultegra.Len J

A good wheelset will last through several framesets and many other equipement upgrades. Ultegra seem to have beeter bearings and are easy to service. For the extra $25 or so, its a no brainer. Especially if you intend to keep the wheels for a while.

On my most recently built wheelset, I chose Ultegra hubs and I very pleased with their performance. As mentioned elsewhere, you can find them at a very affordable price, just a few dollars higher than 105's.
open pro w/ ultg at supergo, $199bm
