I just recently moved from Northern Utah to Southern California. Lancaster to be exact. I went to the LBS to find out which days they had group rides and found out never. They said the closes club or group rides were in Santa Clarita 40 miles south. Now the Antelope Valley area has a population of over 300k and there is no local club? Whats up with that? I thought So. Cal was the cycling meca. If any of you are in the Antelope Valley area lets get together and organize a club and put on some group rides and promote cycling. I see people riding out there every day so lets get together. I would be happy to head it up if I can get some intrest. Email me at

I'm not from there but I know a few people. As I'm sure you are learning, Lancaster, with its high desert climate and frequent heavy winds, isn't quite the cycling mecca that Los Angeles is.

If you ride MTB, you'll find more than a few riders in Lancaster, including many extremely fast racer-types. Most use "Avenue P-land" as their playground. As far as road rides are concerned, maybe the city needed you to come along and stir something up. It's a fast-growing area with a lot of LA transplants--I'm sure there are plenty of cyclists there who feel the same way you do. Good luck.
Guess you have a mission now!nmOwenMeany

I can't really help you too much but I remember a series of posts a month or so ago about a fairly well known local rider in either the lancaster palmdale area that was descending a popular mtn road and got hit head on and died. Many people wrote about this rider and the hilly area as being very popular with cyclists in the area. The messages led me to believe that there were a fair number of riders and at least some clubs in the area. Last week I rode in a rode race near Palmdale but it was put on by Santa Clarita Velo. I would suggest a few more stops at other LBS's may turn up a club or two. Good luck.
