On totalcycling.com there are a number of Mavic wheelsets listed. Experts out there: which one is used for which purpose? Let's compare Ksyrium SSC SL, K Elite, and Classics SSC. I'm 165lbs, hard on the wheels, and break rear spokes every 500-1000 miles on Ultegra, DTs, and Open Pros. The wheels have been professionally built by a local wheelbuilder. Insights are welcomed.

I two break spokes alot on hand built wheels. My buddies talked me into getting the 2002 Ksyrium SSC SL. They will take the beating and are stiffer (I'll get some feedback for that statement).

My buddy rode them for two years and only had them trued twice. As long as you keep a check for trueness you can't go wrong with them. Plus I think their rated for heavier riders as well. My 240+ lbs friend got a pair refered by our local LBS. He hasn't had anything done to his with 3000 miles on them.

I usually get 1000 miles out of a hand built wheel before it needs true or break spokes.

You can find deals on these wheels overseas, but I got my at good price of my LBS for under $800.

Hope this helps.

I got last years so the SSC SL to but exact same wheelset in my opinion and I'm hard on wheels to... 10000 on them but still can get trued up fine especially after 1000 km on Trinidad roads which have more grit and potholes than any road here!
