2 wheelsets necessary? preferred?zeke

I am considering purchasing a 2nd wheelset. currently i am using mavic cosmos and they have been fantastic since i purchased my bike a few months ago. but after reading this board for the past few months, it seems that many have 2nd wheelsets for their roadbikes, eg one for training and the other for actual use.

I have a mtb i also use for commuting and use the road for long distance travel on weekends and am training for a 250mile 3-day tour. most of my road riding is on pretty good roads here in japan.

The wheelset I am interested in is about 1 pound less.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

thanks.

"one for training and the other for actual use"

...isnt training actual use?

I think most that have 2 wheelsets use one for training/all-rounding, and another 'nice' set for racing.

Some (like me) who dont have the luxury of a bike for every occassion will have two wheelsets for various types of riding... for example 'road' tires for commuting on an ATB.

Since youve already stated your current set is 'fantastic', why spend the money on another set?

yes training is actual use. my excuse is i was in a rush when i posted that message, i should have written "commuting" instead of "actual use".

i agree, why should i spend the money. its just becoming difficult not to spend $$$ when i see some cylce accessories these days.

thanks for the comments.

There is no real "need" for a second set. If you flat while racing you will need a wheel change no time to fix flats.

Need is a very relative term. I train and race on a set of Open Pros with Record hubs not sexy but light and sturdy. My second set of wheels are on my second bike. I just pull them off on race day.

I know guys who "need" 3 sets one for training, one for racing and one for time trialing. Nothing wrong with that you have to spend your money somewhere. IMO unless you are racing I'd spend the money elsewhere. That is unless you "need" them.
