I want THAT bike...PT
Apr 22, 2002 2:09 PM
I was at the Boulder, CO criterium yesterday (4/21) as a spectator. Some guy went off the front of the masters 35+ and college men's A race and powered effortlessly to the win. I think it was Chris Carter. Well, the point was he looked so good, so professional, so dominating that I immediately fell in love with his bike (some sort of Merckx with a red/white/blue motif). I am sure if I had that bike I could go faster (never mind that my own steed is way better than I deserve). I guess my point is that the best salesman for a bike is a dominant rider performing live -- I could care less what a euro pro rides. Pictures and TV don't do them or their bikes justice. I want a Merckx just like that guy has!

Which is EXACTLY the same thought that I had when I opened up the February 2001 issue of Cycle Sport magazine to find pics of a couple of Erik Zabel's green scheme Tour bikes. Pinarello didn't quite copy their past work for me, but what I did end up with is very close and very satisfying...and yes I put myself through alot more suffering on that bike than I do on any other because the bike deserves nothing less.

After Domo posted another phat win at Paris-Roubiax (sp?) those bikes started flyin' off the shelves again. I was at Chicagoland Bike on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and the manager said they'd sold two SCs that morning alone. IMHO, they have the nicest paint scheme out there, and the Scandium rides quick. Supposedly a short lifespan, but if you're buying SCs on whim, I doubt you care.
