I am wondering what experiences people have had 'communicating' with bugs and other things while on rides. here are a couple of my experiences.

while riding today i was bitten/stung by some type of insect, on my hand above my thumb where a space usually resides on cycling gloves. it hurt so much i almost lost control. i wasnt able to catch a glimpse of it. it didnt feel like a bee sting though. a bit later in that same ride, a large moth-like creature got itself lodged between my helmet strap and my face while i was moving along at about 25kph. i think my persperation did it in. didnt realize the size of the thing until i stopped for a drink. it was not pleasant peeling its remains from the side of my face.

last week i swallowed a something, larger than a mosquito and smaller than a fly that travels in swarms, while riding thru some pear orchards. the sensation of swallowing a bug wasnt too bad!

First he hit me in the chest (double shirt on, HAA) Then he fell onto my left thigh and stung me through the shorts and I have a large red itchy spot bout the size of a silver dollar on my leg. Bugs have been unusually large for this early in the year.

Was out in the Sacramento Delta and its farm lands Saturday. We ate enough small bugs that Gu wasn't necessary to keep the energy up :-)

Last Fall I got stung by something. It left me dizzy and with a lump that lasted two weeks to remember it by. Scared me enough that I ride with an epi pen now.

Over the years I have been hit by all manner of things, everything from dragon flys to gnats, but three stand out. I once had a large something (entomology is not my bag) fly in one of the vents in my helmet and lodge on the top of my head. I couldn't get the helmet off fast enough.
Another time, a wasp actually got under the leg of my cycling shorts. I have no idea how it managed that but I got a heck of a welt as a result.
Lastly, has anyone else ever been attacked by a bird? A couple of summers ago a red wing black bird dived on me a number of times, once actually pecking my helmet. I can only assume it saw me as a threat to a nearbye nest or something.

That'll teach me to breathe through my nose.
I like the Squirrels that double back after they start to cross the road. JEEEEZ!
I scared some unsuspecting little mongrel dogs sh**less once after they chased my buddy for a half mile as he rode ahead of me. They were so focused on him that they had no idea I was coming up behind. I barked really loud as I snuck up behind them. They went yelping down the embankment like scared meat!

YES, there is a Santa Claus.

There I am minding my own business half way thru the 2001 Bay to Bay ride out in the Delaware bay salt marshes when I get a flat. No big deal, tell the rest of the group to go ahead & i'll meet them at the rest stop. I start to change the tire & realize that I am under attack by a swarm of green head flys. So there I am standing on the side of the road, trying to both change the tire & swat & dodge these flys. Another rider said that if they had a video camera, they could have made some real money. As it was, people were laughing so hard as they went by that there were almost a couple of accidents.

Damn flys bit m right through my shorts, I started to wonder if they could carry me away. Not fun
