|Mapei triumphs and Italians dominated the race. Just finished watching the last hour of the race on TV. A small break had been away including Kessler (Telekom), Basso (Fassa), Bettini and Garzelli (Mapei), Codol (Lampre), and Celestino and another Saeco rider. They had been hanging off the front by no more than 25 seconds for a long time. Both Musseuw (at about 150k) and Rodriguez (second feed zone) had retired so Domo nation were left with Merckx who also had a go. Lance went to the front with 20k to go but it was very disorganized. Up the La Redoute, Garzelli who'd been driving the break went to the front and dropped the other Saeco rider and the bunch seemed to lose interest. |
This group of six continued to work together until the Cote de Saint Nicklaus when Garzelli, at the very bottom of the climb, again went off the front and was then quickly joined by Bettini. At that point, they managed to get away from the remaining members of the break. At the last curve Bettini stuck out his hand to congratulate Garzelli and then they sprinted for the finish with Bettini taking the race. Both raised their hands as they went over the line with Bettini pointing at Garzelli. A great team effort. In the interview Bettini said that they'd planned to get away on the last climb and that Garzelli was the team leader for the Giro and he, Bettini, would pay him back for today's effort in that race.
BTW, I just noticed that the Mapei rider's name are now on the back of their jersey. Difficult to see in that mass of color.
