advice for knee pain, stiffnessbianchi boy

I'm looking for some advice from other bikers who have experienced and recovered from knee problems. After never experiencing knee problems during years of running and biking, I seem to have developed some problems over the past few weeks. It all started when I switched from the Look pedals I had been using to Speedplays. My knees started feeling some discomfort at first, but I thought it might just be from getting used to the new pedals. After two weeks and more pain, I took a few days off riding and then removed the Speeds and went back to my Looks. Knee problem went away.

... Then last weekend later, in my bike club's first century of the year, I apparently hurt one of my knees again. I rode with some friends who normally start out easy and maintain the same pace. This time, a couple of guys started out real fast trying to keep up with a faster group. Me and a woman we ride with got dropped on a hill, and then I pulled a paceline for about 5 miles catching up with the rest of our group. To make a long story short, I finished the ride tired but otherwise OK. The next morning, however, my legs were extremely tight and sore and it was hard to bend my knees, particularly the right one.

The soreness has gotten better through the week, but my right knee is still very stiff and hard to bend. I don't feel any pain from it unless I bend it a lot -- like from doing the quad stretches where you pull foot up against your butt, and that does hurt. I didn't ride Mon-Weds, but took easy spins Thursday and Friday. My knees didn't hurt during riding, but definitely felt stiff and little sore after I finished.

Anyway, I'm not sure what to do at this point. Should I lay off riding for a week and see what happens? Or just continue doing easy spins? I'm trying to be more diligent about stretching, as well. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm stumped on this one. No pain while riding, but stiffness afterwards? Is is possible that you are just way, way too tight and need to stretch like heck from now on? If it's hard to bend, is there swelling? I don't really have any advice for you, but will leave you with a link that's been helpful to me. Good luck.

I am way too tight. I try to stretch at least once a day, but probably just don't do it enough. I am also naturally not very flexible. I have to ride with a fairly high handlebar because I'm just not flexible enough to bend over more. Guess that's something I'll need to work on.

this won't help, just wanted you to know I've got a similar problem.

it isn't that it's stiff, but my right knee has lately been sore after rides. i checked my position with saddle and leg angles - looks ok. i went back to the gym to see if i could do a little conditioning for it, and i discovered the right was slightly weaker than the left. together, they're very strong but doing lunges and one-legged squats i found the right lacked quickness and stability. (strange thing, is that i run fine - no problems there)

i might see a specialist, but i'm going to monitor it for a week or so. it started when i jumped from 1.5 hour rides to 2.5/3 hour rides. so i'm going to take it easier and focus on form now.
