Personal Question about Underwear??????(15 posts)

Personal Question about Underwear??????Mack
Apr 18, 2002 5:49 PM
Please don't take this the wrong way but..........I'm a relative newcomer to cycling and am curious as to what you men wear under your shorts or bibs? Sounds like a silly question I'm sure, but my closet full of running shorts with built-in briefs are no longer of use.

Thanks for the help!

I should include the reasoning. Underwear will rub you raw underneath your cycling shorts, therefore defeating the purpose of the cyling shorts in the first place.

the cotton in underwear will trap moisture (no wicking) and bacteria (read: saddle sore) in a way that shorts worn commando should prevent.

I was a reluctant convert to commando. But, ms. j has hit what I think is the real reason. Cotton don't wick. I am now a committed commando.

When I was racing and really racking up the training miles I didn't wear underwear, but lately I've been using seamless coolmax or thermax (or whatever) briefs and I actually like them better than nothing at all. They don't have seams to chafe, and they wick the perspiration better than lycra alone. They also provide a little extra padding. Still havent tried them on anything over 50 miles, but I suspect they'd be OK on longer rides too.
