What do you call your bike(s)?Slipstream
Apr 18, 2002 9:40 AM
Do you have a pet name for your bike(s)? If you don't, then how do you refer to it?

Gregg--maybe you can sponsor a "coolest" bike name contest....

4 bikes:

ol' faithful - 20yr old 531 steel
crissy - cross bike
campy - first campy rigged bike, bianchi eros w/mirage
????? - C-40 w/full record: no name yet????
umm, My Bike? Inanimate objects tend to name themselves (I hadbill

a car named Jezebel once based on the letters of her license plate "JEZ", randomly received, and, son of a gun, it fit), but the inanimate objects around me stopped naming themselves a long time ago. After naming children, well, somehow I guess I haven't been hearing whatever it is my toys have been trying to tell me.
You kids have fun, though.

Pinarello Galileo : Agnes
Gary Fisher Sugar 4+ : Emily

The names comes from the relatively same feeling of having my first ride on the bike as having my first conversation with some one that I spent a decent amount of my life with.

"See me now World. Behold this majesty. As I! fleet of wheel, keen of mind, with seeming effortlessness roar by under the subsonic whir of my transmission in perfect harmony with the inner planetary centrifuge. Herald my coming, call to the others! That they too shall bear witness! He has come! He is coming! (no wait, nope, he is going, he is gone) See the ripple I cast as the air is pressed before me, and ushers me on! This great and mighty thorougfare I step through like Goliath, yes, like him. Ich bin ein super-duper Ubermench!I call my bike: Galacticus!!"

and then the big sweeping turn into the wind onto juuust enough of an incline and *poot*! "What be this!? I am slowing. This force. "I AM HEADWIND. GREAT AND MIGHTY" What has become of me! Ist Gott Tott! My powers...Destroyed! look away, I...am...hideous! i am really just a dingle berry? I suck. I am little. i am shrunken. i am so far, from home<:( I call my bike: my only friend"

But wait! I love! This cycling madness, and soldier on! And it's into the drops head down and into the wind I shall lumber,I grunt like the animal I am proud to be, drool and grind: 'I will work! I am mighty! I will go forward!....I will pitch the damn thing into the hatchback and hit the drive through...!

a little crass, my apologies to the brooding omniprescence.
But naming the bike just seems a bit too...ummm....mechano-sexual, I thought about it, was going to ask here as Slips did (too embarrassed was I!)if people actually did this, but I didn't warm up to the idea, seems like those dopey guys who name their...ahh...you know...their, mmm Gregg, help me out here...well, their woody. Come to think of it, I wonder if those same guys have one name for mr. turgid and another for the little guy! why am i talking about this?...geesh. pardon me....
I like "My Next bike". I have a lot of those (nm)Dave Hickey

Then there's "the other bike," "the singlespeed" and "the mountain bike."
The singlespeed used to be "the commuter," but now I commute on the other bike.
Of my three most used, only one has a name...tempeteKerouak

My road bike is a road bike.
The mtb (has travelled all over the world with me) has no name either.

The only one that has a name is my city clunker, an old 10 spd Peugeot randonneur (touring), turned into a triple.

It's called "Spoutnik". It's my own spaceship into the city, atop which I see the world from a different point of view. I love all my bikes!

My wife refers to her as the other woman, or sometimes that spoiled tart. It is a bit of a joke between us, as I have used the excuse "It's better than me having an affair" to justify my cycling addiction. My wife just says it's a cross she has to bear.

When I got my Colnago MXL last week I had to give her an Italian name so I picked Sophia after Sophia Loren. As for my Trek, it never earned a name, it's just a bike.

My Dream Plus got nicknamed "George" right off the bat, don't know why but it stuck. Oh, well - Hincapie is a total babe.

My boyfriends claims I should call the Colnago Dream Cross "Freddie" for consistency, so that's begun to stick as well.

The Morgul Bismark has been "Al" from day one, since "Aero Al" appears prominently on the top tube.

My vintage '81 steel Trek with Nuovo Record fixie is, and always has been "Stella".

My Klein hardtail was variously "The Klein" when it did work or "that worthless chain-suck machine" when it needed work. It now thankfully has a new zip code.

My old Redline tank of a 'cross bike was affectionately known to all as "The Sled". The Sled's career earnings totaled nearly 165% of its worth (earned $470 racing it, spent a tad shy of $300 to build it up) in primes and prize money. I doubt I'll ever be able to say that about George, Freddie or Al.

training bike= "the training pig"
race bike="giant killer", the story is that the bike is a giant TCR0 hence the "giant", killer because on my day I can beat the best of the them, and because my real name is David( David and Golieth)

first bike - mid 80's. Named "Darth" as in vader. Why? Because he was black, because he was a centurion brand and I thought of star wars (found out later they were on battlestar gallactica). 2, because my helmet was black and 3 because at the top of any good hill, I'd gasp and breathe the way ol' darth vader did.

Second bike is Grover. Why? because he's blue. Simple really.

Violet is my commute bike (A Bridgestone Mile 112.)
