|Well I've learned a valuable lesson that I hope I can spread to others in the value of helmets so I'd like to share my story since I know some people especially a lot of euros don't wear helmets!
Anyway my name is Nick Corcoran. I'm a member of the Canadian National Cycling Team in a developement sense and was lucky enough to go to Junior Worlds last year. So after a hard winter of training with in excess of 6000 km (I'm a sprinter so this is a lot!) our first test was Trinidad in mid to late March for a cycling series there every year. So on March 30th... 2nd last race 2nd last night after a very good couple weeks of training racing and tanning I was picked to be led out for a sprint in a 2 lap race. Well things didn't go according to plan... going into the last lap a Trinidadian guy crashed my teammate right in front of me and at 60 km/h I tried to bunny hop him which was unsuccessful and I went flying at least 30 feet headfirst into the ground even after attempting to somersault the landing. Result? A severe brain injury (worse than concussion)... I didn't remember anything up until Monday night even though I was there albeit sleeping 22 hours a day. I hate to think of what could have happened without a helmet. I've been hit on the road once before and couldn't remember the accident since I got a brain injury/concussion. So helmets make a difference. I hate to think of what COULD have happened if I decided not to wear a helmet. And for the record I miss riding like crazy... I can't start doing any physical activity for another week and a half minimum. Great way to start the season here... but at least I'm alive to start it.
Anyway enough of my preaching! I'll have the video on my website... http://www.podiumbound.ca in the next while as it comes online. Right now its in the developement phases and can only be seen at http://www.podiumbound.ca/test/
