Wifes first group ride(8 posts)

Saturday was my wifes first group ride and her first ride over 20 miles. She has been fighting the group thing tooth and nail, but since she backed out on doing the Ride for The Roses this weekend I talked her into going on a local group ride Saturday. She did great! She hung in with the main group for over half of the 34-mile ride (which was listed as a 26 mile ride). She probably could have hung on longer but a few things happened and caused us to drop off the back of the main pack. Plus she started to hit the wall. So we slowed the pace a little and rode back most of the way alone and with some other stragglers. When we usually ride together our pace is about 12-15 mph, Saturday it was close to 17. The cool thing was that she was doing so well we had 2 grown men stuck to our back tires to help them get back. Which kind of annoyed me because they never came around and pulled at any time. At least one of them thanked us at the end. She was very excited about the ride and I have a feeling shes looking forward to the next one. The only thing bad about this is now she needs cute shorts and jerseys.

That is really great for both of you. A suggestion, buy her all the clothes she wants. Having a partner who is excited about being with you is lots of fun.

Quo Vadis, Mama? This is our code: Where you going, mama? For when you have guys that suck and don't pull.

Let us know how it goes.

ride hard; have fun; be safe ;>)

Congratulations to both of you!
I've learned that my wife rides group rides faster when I'm not with her. Then she tends to make sure she's in the midst of everything. But when I'm along, she's willing to drift off the back when she feels like taking it easy, because she knows I'll hang with her.

You are a lucky, lucky man. And outfitting the iwfe in cycling shorts and jersey a bad thing? I don't think so. If only my wife would ride. Ride at all, even little trips around the neighborhood I would be happy. "Too uncomfortable" on the saddle she says. Bummer for me.

You are blessed!

I completely agree. I am lucky enough to have a wife that enjoys cycling and dressing her up is part of the experience. ;)

Shopping for shorts and jerseys in strores and catalogs that I enjoy feels like a very small price to pay for sharing riding with my wife. I find that all aspects of our marriage improve when both of us are riding. It seems like you've grasped the concept that when you go on a group ride with your wife you belong to her, not to the group until and unless she releases you.

Very good news for both of you! After a couple of years of resisting, my husband has finally started enjoying riding with me. Although I think it has more to do with our 4 yo daughter's interest in riding all the time than my pleading with him. Hey, whatever it takes...

BTW, the outfitting part is a GOOD thing, not bad. Hubby is glad he always has some gift ideas for my birthday, Christmas, etc. He doesn't even have to ask for ideas anymore, he just picks up the CC or Performance catalog. (What a lucky girl am I :-))

Keep it up and keep it fun.

Once I got the first nerve-wracking group ride under my butt, I was certainly hooked!

Even though I consider my husband to be more hard core than I am, *I* was the one pushing him out the door to our group rides this season!

There's just something about riding with other people that brings out the competitive streak in the meekest of us.
