Commuting as training???? Please critique my plan.mikebikr

As far a rest rest/recovery and effective training.

Monday:
Drive to work and stop at the gym in the AM to lift for my legs.

Tuesday:
Drive to work. Bike home doing mostly flat work and TT stuff. Spin-ups, Pyramids, Sprints, Muscle tension intervals. 35-45 miles.

Wednesday:
Easy ride into work. Two decent hills about 12 miles.

Thursday:
Drive to work. Bike home doing primarily hill work. (6-8) 5 minute plus climbs at or just above LT. Also some short hill bursts 30 seconds or less. 35-45 miles

Friday:
Easy ride into work. Two decent hills about 12 miles.

Saturday/Sunday:
Race or very hard ride with varying pace and effort 50 miles or so. The other day is my just ride for fun day. Either a leisurely road ride or a fun MTB ride.

Is this plan going to be effective? Any suggestions?

Well because of time constraints, I use a commuting day or 2 each week for training purposes and it fits my schedule real well. Fixed gear 30 miles round trip. I get more out of that workout then commuter train riding....

I think it sounds like a good plan. After a while you will probably want to stop taking the car altogether. It is a good way to get in extra miles without alot of extra time away from the family.

Sounds fine. Don't let yourself get locked into something that gets boring, though.
As for riding more, I agree with Softrider. My commute is about 22 miles round trip. Takes me 15+ minutes to drive each way, about 40-45 to ride. I don't see the family in the morning either way, so that doesn't cost me anything. If I ride home, it takes half an hour longer, but then I DON'T have to get motivated, change clothes and do all the other stuff involved in a workout. I get home a little later but feeling good and with my basic workout already finished.

Ride in and home more often and then you can cut back on the weekend for the family, or do more "fun" riding.

Best thing about commuting is the motivation. You only need it for the trip there. Then you HAVE to ride home.

Lot easier than the gym. I've always figured that if it takes me 15 minutes to get to the gym by car (include parking) to spin for 30 minutes, then I should just ride to the gym, turn around, and then ride home.

I need a vehicle for work (contractor) so I bike home and then have to ride in the next morning to get to work. Of course that has resulted in some nasty rides in. 35 and pouring. 20 and snowing etc. The weathermen in Western PA aren't very accurate.

We must share the same forecasters!

For me, I like to do intensity days (at least flat intervals) on my rides to work. I seem to be able to get warmed up, do a few hard efforts and cool down in 30-40 mins. each way. I'm typically late so there's a great motivator to push harder!

is probably the best plan for people with limited time or other commitments if its possible. I have worked training into my daily commute, otherwise I would be much more erratic about training and fat/slow. I have to go to work everyday, and I only commute by bicycle.. Your schedule is similar to mine except I ride hard MWF and use TU TH for recovery days, and keep weekends free for other stuff, but do long rides and family rides sometimes.
The hardest part about it for me is sticking to easy/slow recovery days because I'm always running late and have to ride fast ; ).
