Problem with Chris King headset...ronvermeeren

Hello,

Recently I build a knew bike, i like it very much but the headset is not working correct/smooth. I have a 1' Chris King treathless headset. The problem is with adjusting the headset, it is either to tight or to loose. Last time i gone out for a tour, something strange happened. First the headset seamed ok, but when i rode over a gap in the rode the headset became tightener. The bar doesn't steer smooth anymore...

What can be the problem here?

Was the head tube and fork crown properly faced? If the bearing cups or fork race are not sitting perfectly flat you might get strange things happening with the bearings like you describe. Manufacturers usually take care of this, but some do a better job than others. King headsets have pretty tight tolerances.

Best of luck,
Ken

As the king of fresno pointed out, King headsets are sensitive to irregularities in the frame and fork - if the headtube and fork crown weren't faced, that's likely the problem - the stem could also be the problem if the stem clamp isn't flat where it rests against the headset.
