|Hopefully never, 8 is solid, 9 is plenty, 10 is over kill, 14 is wicked dumb. (internal, system could work though)
I am against this because...
The chain will have to become radically small and concequently weaker to accomidate the increase in sprockets.
The R D can only be so accurate, the main this is durability and over all performance without "testy" components. A Fararri F11 is cool, but practical, No. It needs constant attention and mantainance. I am more interested in not having a drive train that is "assumed" and "accepted" that it will "fail" and need constant up keep and rediculous tolorances.
Reasons I might change my mind...
I will only allow this, if the standard it to have a single crank. We can all look like Lance in the mountains.

I have a pic of Lance winning the alp d'huez stage and he has one STI shifter and one downtube shifter, suggesting a double chainring, althouh I can't see this in the pic. It could be some sort of secsret nitrous oxide switch, which would explain alot.

|Shimano patented a design in 1999 for a 14speed cluster. At the time they said they had no plans to produce this system. However, it would work like this. Imagine the chain's inner plate is roughly horseshoe shaped so that the cogs can be placed closer together and the inner plate will sit above the next larger cog. This would mean the cog and chain thickness and thus contact area need not necessarily much thinner than the current standards of 9 and 10 speed.|

|The reason for this is that the downtube shifter is lighter (for those who care enough...) than the STI shifter; thus on his mountain climbing bike, it is important to get as close to the 14 lb UCI weight limit...|
