Spokes Tuesday Night Rides Begin Tonight! Hey Chicago!!!RadicalRonPruitt
Apr 9, 2002 9:43 AM
Hey Chicago riders, the Spokes Tuesday night rides begin tonight at the Danada Shopping Center at 5:30. This is a great opportunity to meet up with some of the best riders in the Southwest Burbs. Hope to see a lot of people out there. Spokes welcomes all riders, and they always hope for a good turnout. The Saturday morning rides will take place at 9 am at the same starting point.
Anyone know about the Tuesday Flyers ride in Barrington?greg n

I haven't heard anything, but I'll be checking tonight to see if anyone is meeting.

You ought to come down and do the Spokes ride. They put together a real nice ride around Fermi and get a good crowd.
Check out the website I posted below...Alex-in-Evanston

It has a good schedule and description of training rides around Chicago.

call Arlington Bicycle Company in Arlington Heights. I'm not sure where the Tuesday ride starts from.
Shouldn't the Fliers start their own post instead of using SPOKERadicalRonPruitt

Shouldn't you people start your own post instead of using the SPOKES post to attract people to your ride?

The correct place for this thread in the first place was in the 'Rides and Clubs' forum.

But it's perfectly reasonable for people to post questions or comments regarding other rides nearby in response to a post advertising a ride. And, as an aside, you would probably gain some credibility if you made a post or comment that didn't involve SPOKES and how great they are. Which, I'm sure is true. As it stands, I think a lot of people are (maybe wrongly) beginning to think that you own or work at SPOKES.
and I am not selling anythingRadicalRonPruitt

I don't own or work for SPOKES. Second of all, I am not selling anything, rather than letting people know the SPOKES ride starts tonight. Be there, or be square!
I will be square...TJeanloz

But I'm confused about why you would be upset that somebody mentioned another ride in your thread about the SPOKES ride, particularly because you have no vested interest in the Spokes ride?

Just felt like they were using my opportunity to promote a ride to shift thinking in another direction.
Why do you think that I was trying to do that?Kristin
Apr 9, 2002 11:48 AM
Why don't you email me at so we can disuss your concerns. They seem to be deep enough for you to have accused me publicly.
Steering the discussion away from SPOKESRadicalRonPruitt

Why are you taking this thing so personally? It wasn't you who steered the discussion away from SPOKES.
What I still don't understand,TJeanloz
Apr 9, 2002 12:04 PM
What I don't understand is why you've taken offense to the discussion evolving. When we discuss wheels (which we do far too often) and the initial post specifically asks: "What do you think about Ksyriums?" it often gets steered into a "They're nice, but Speedreams are also nice." And a discussion follows re: speedreams. The initial poster doesn't get all in a huff and say: "Take your Speedreams conversation elsewhere, this thread is about Ksyriums."

It's natural that the discussion is going to ebb and flow towards and away from the exact topic of the original post.

you are right. I was out of line. I just get sick of everyone on this board talking crap about my friends at SPOKES.

If you want to hear negative things about anything cycling related, just make a thread like:

"Product XYZ is the coolest, best thing ever!"

There will be no shortage of people who will come out with horror stories regarding product XYZ. With your constant support of Spokes, people naturally do the same thing. I'm sure there are people who were displeased with the service that I gave over the years, and if somebody said: "That Ted at (shop name excluded to protect the innocent) is really awesome." I'm sure 5 people would come out and say: "that guy is a total prick, I would never go there."

The opposite is also true, if you were to say: "That Ted is a real prick." (I hope) somebody would say: "I've had really good experiences at his shop, but I'm sorry to hear that yours were not so nice." It's just the nature of the beast that people here want to give everybody as much information (read: opinion) as possible.

Actually the press that SPOKES was getting on this board was really bad, so I decided to post some positives and defend my shop of choice. No one else was doing this but me, with the exception of a couple of others that Raouf asked to come on here and say good things about SPOKES. That being Amanda and Tracey. They came on here and said some good stuff, but the bad stuff kept happening. Judging from what Raouf and Sammy are saying, it has hurt their business a little. They lost a deal on a bicycle because of the feed back a customer got on this board. I am here to say SPOKES is a great place to shop for bikes. Come join the ride and experience SPOKES.
That's part of the problem...TJeanloz

I follow things of this nature with keen interest, because of my former bike shop life. I don't really care about Spokes or the meat of the argument at all- I've never been, and don't plan to travel 1000 miles just to check it out.

But people on these boards have a pretty keen sense of when somebody who they think is biased is 'shilling' on the boards. It got ugly with Airborne a couple of years ago. And people have taken to believe that you are the mouthpiece of Raouf and Sammy. And they further discount what Amanda and Tracey said upon learning that Spokes put them up to posting. Credibility on the internet is a very fine line to toe, and in many people's eyes, you've crossed it with regards to Spokes. I am morbidly interested in checking out the shop to make a determination for myself, but in my honest judgement, I don't think too highly of the place- largely because of things you've said about it (see my post of a week ago RE: mavic Mektronic.)

They are good people. I don't know why so many people on this board don't like Sammy and Raouf. They are good people to deal with, and they give good deals.

On the "hot deals" forum you referred us to their internet site, claiming big bargains were to be had.

It was on the GENERAL forum that you "just promoted a ride."

Keep your spam straight. It enhances your fragile credibility.

What credibility? If you were wanting to promote Spokes would you do it in such a LAME way? This guy is doing exactly the damage he intended to do.

Are you Sammy's gay lover?

No. I am married and have a wife. I am not gay. I don't know about Sammy. I don't think he is. I am not though.

Is it true that the SPOKES rides are a little on the slow side? Just curious. Where do the fast groups start?
New to Chicago, so I just want to know.
Question For Radical RonRadicalRonPruitt
Apr 9, 2002 12:31 PM
No they aren't slow. We ride at about a 16 mile an hour pace, so we are cooking. Raouf is a good strong rider that helps people build up to the fast paceline riding that we do. I would suggest riding with us. Both rides meet in the same parking lot.

Raouf is slow, slow , slow. 16 mph isn't even warm up speed, it's below recovery speed! Radical Ron I'm calling you out. You are not really promoting Spokes, you are trolling.

The group that Ron calls the "reckless" group is faster, definitely race pace in sections. It's a bunch of racers and is no different than any group of racers. Some are fast, some slower and some are inconsiderate. There used to be a couple of guys that were the unofficial leaders that kept things together and tried to make sure the dangerous or inexperienced riders kept their heads out of their butts.
Question For Radical RonTroyboy
Apr 9, 2002 1:36 PM
16 mph fast????? Not to me! LOL Heck, my team's schmoozer/social ride is probably 19/20.
I just spit soda out of my noseKristin
Apr 9, 2002 1:49 PM
With all due respect. 16 MPH pace is not considered very fast to most seasoned road bike racers. I'm not trying to be harsh or prejudiced. Last summer was my first road cycling season and my personal best average was 18.5 MPH. But I also KNOW I'M SLOW. 16MPH is considered a newbie pace. Which is fine. I'm going to post some other suggestions for the person who wanted to know if there are other "fast" rides in the area. I am going to assume he can maintain a 20+ MPH pace.

Outdoor Adventures-Barrington Area (Our start point is being relocated.) Various paces. We (yes, I'm with this group) are reorganizing at the moment; but we should begin rides in May. We meet on Tuesday nights. This ride includes a 28 mile loop that paces at 20+ MPH. Since we are looking for a new start point, I don't have more info at this time. If you want to recieve information about this club, drop me a note at, and I will get you on the mailing list.

Arlington Flyers also Tuesdays. Very fast group. They are associated with Arlington Bike Shop

Spin Doctors Thursdays. This is a 25+ route that is very fast as well. Associated with Spin Docs in Bartlette. I have never ridden with them, but I know lots who do.

Another shop that has rides in the Elk Grove area and has a team is Village CycleSport.

These are the only rides I know of in the area. Sorry, they are all in the NW burbs. If in the Western burbs, check out the Fox Valley Cycle & Ski Club.
The guys at Village Cycle Sport in Elk Grove are cool. (nm)Pack Meat

Is this ride restricted to people that kiss Sammy's buttocks.Pack Meat

Or can anybody jump in. Last yeat there were a bunch of "the best riders in the southwest suburbs" that were excluded and not allowed to ride with you homos. And by calling you a homo I don't want to offend any actual homosexuals, my most humble apologies if I do.
I wouldn't kiss Sammy's butt.RadicalRonPruitt

Are you part of the other group that meets in Spokes lot and wishes you could ride with us, who are the best riders in the SW burbs, and not the ones that give riders a bad name like you guys. I guess you will be out there tonight, wishing you were with us. You guys ride reckless and that is why you were not asked to ride with Spokes.
