My 1999 lugged steel Paramount has developed a 5/8" crack across the inside of the crown casting. The dealer is gracious enough to go halves on a new Reynolds carbon fork, but has anyone else had a lugged steel Paramount crown fail? Seems like they shouldn't do that.

It shouldn't have done that, and I have never heard of one doing that. Unless I'm mistaken, your bike has a Henry James fork crown. I'd call the folks at Waterford Precision Cycles, and see what they will do for you. Most likely, they built the bike, and they will stand behind what they have done. My observation is that their workmanship is impeccable, and their service is also.

Waterford stopped making Paramounts for Schwinn in 93 or 94. This bike was manufactured by the now defunct Match Bicycles. This article on the Rivendell site seems to indicate a former builder for Match now works at Rivendell, so possibly they can give you advice on what to do about your fork.
