|Dumb question about the Paris-Roubaix...||floatch|

|I've always loved the pictures of the perry-roobay riders, because the riders look like they've been submerged in mud. There's a great picture of George Hincapie (USPS), Johan Museeuw and Servais Knaven (Domo) covered in mud at http://www.cyclingnews.com/photos/index.php
The question is: How does this happen? I've ridden MTB's for a long time and never gotten that muddy. I'm guessing it's the spray from other riders' wheels, no? I'm only guessing because I've never seen video of it, but I'd love to. Any info?

|It's wheel spray from other bikes over the muddy roads and cobbles. I did a road ride once where I came out looking like that - lots of spray from other bikes running through mud. It was kind of fun, actually.|

|As you actually ride much more by yourself or a bit further and higher to the front rider(s) in a MTB race/group ride, try sucking a wheel in the rain or... in the muddy cobbles...
Road races imply some pack riding, or some hanging back at someone's rear for a while... Tuck in on the drops and keep your wheel a few inches from the pulling dude... Ooops your nose is just in the spay line!

|I read once where the riders referred to the mud as 'Belgian toothpaste.' :-0|

|I can only hope that the coverage will be good and not chopped down to sound bite size. With regards to the coating of mud...both your own front wheel as well as the rider in front of you contribute to that coating of mud...during an epic race like last years Paris-Roubaix the racers generally didn't suck wheel as closely as you would expect and definitely not during the cobbled sections...it's entirely too easy to get taken out of the whole race when it's that slick.|
|FWIW, I thought this year's coverage was great. nm||EpicX|

|...not nearly as good as two years ago. I think the live coverage last year was only about an hour long. Very much looking forward to the expanded coverage this year! Got my VCR warming up for recording on SP for optimum playback quality!
