Tour de France Shocker

With the news that 6 wild card teams for the tour de France will be announced on May 2nd, race organiser Jean Marie Le Blanc, speaking from his Paris base today announced that the selection process would be more stringent than in previous years.

"It is above all," he said, "a French race - which is why we must use the wild card process to favour French teams so they can be properly represented. However, this year we are taking the logical step and excluding any rider or team who is not fully fluent in the French language."

"Fortunately, following our close association during Paris Nice, Laurent Fignon has kindly agreed to arrange both oral and written exams for riders suspected of being linguistically challenged. These will take place in the race village prior to the prologue - any rider failing the exam will be replaced by one from a pool of French riders."
