Dissapointing first road race of the season!ride24-7

Well, to make a long story short, I am on a come back from a long pause in racing. I used to race very competitively almost 10 years ago and never had any problems. I began training last year for this years race season. I had a few rides where I had severe leg cramps so I decided that I needed to retrain my body to burn fat instead of carbs and that is what I did over the winter. I logged over 2500 miles from Dec to the end of Feb. To get to the point, I tested myself at a fairly popular Road race in Virginia last weekend. The Cat 1-2-3 race was 70 miles and I felt fine all the way up to 50 and then the cramps set in and set in bad. I had no choice but to let up and once I got gapped, that was it, I had to ride the last 20 miles alone. Ive tried everything I can think of including hydrating a few days before the event to spending money on good electrolyte drinks. Now, Im kinda stuck with what to do. Any info or suggestions would be great. Thanks for reading.

After 10 years, starting off in a 1-2-3 race to "test your legs" is not real smart. You can't expect to suddenly be back at that same conditioning level with that kind of lay off. Cat 4/5 or masters, 40-60 miles to start out and then if you feel strong enough you can try Cat 3.

Disappointing yes, but only because I think your expectations were too high. Give it time. And BTW, EVERY time I used the "expensive electrolyte drinks" I got cramps. Gatorade? Yup. ERG? Yup. Water? No. Defizzed and watered down Coke? No. So I just go with what works for me. Cytomax was okay, if I could stomach the taste.
