Making a stiff wheelset(5 posts)

Making a stiff wheelsetTimePedal
Mar 26, 2002 9:19 AM
This maybe a silly question, but I'm wondering what makes a stiff wheelset. I just got a new wheelset, sun venus rims (30mm rim) with Record hubs. This wheelset felt like butter (not that it was mushy, but very smooth) compared to my Ksyriums..however, I did notice when I was out of the saddle, the front wasn't as stiff. So I'm wondering if I can make a lighter wheelset than my K's, and have them feel just as smooth as the wheelset I just got, but also have them as stiff as the K's.....Any input would be appreciated.

ADAs are known to be very flexy I need to dig up the comparison data I've seen somewhere.
(don't take me wrong I'd love to get a pair.. as long as I don't pay for it from my pocket ;)

Pluck the spokes in your Ksyriums and then compare that tone to the spokes in your Venus wheelset. Hopefully they are laced similarly, to yield more comparable results. Chances are good that your Venus wheelset could stand some more tension, especially if you are rubbing brake pads while rocking. Just make sure you don't crack the rim around the nipples due to excessive tension.
